    In garage studio

I am wanting to setup a home studio just for family shot in my garage using a white back drop. Right now the lighting is four sets of fluorecent lights. What would be a good all purpose light for this situation. I thought to use one halogen on a stand. Any suggestions?

I suggest opening the garage door and reflecting sunlight off of a large white surface. Otherwise, I think it will be hard to get decent results with continuous lighting.

u can try 2 pop off portable flashes to walls, ceiling...etc to defuse and bounce off the light, and have sum reflective stuff such as foil paper glue on card board use as reflector so u can get sum cheap defused even lighting.

Like Matt said using available light with reflectors would be a good way to start out. He's right too about continuous lighting. It's a pain to get it bright enough to get decent apertures just to name one problem. Unless you have white or grey walls they aren't going to be much of a help with bounced light. It might be worth it to paint the walls if they are colored or dark. Here is a thread from Photonet that had some info on others who used their garages as a studio and how they made it work for them.
