A couple from Tuesdays game that wound up a pitchers duel with the home team winning 1-0. The pitcher allowed 1 hit and struck out 14.

Nice action John. Can somebody tell me why softball uniforms are so often short pants. Most of the girls play the game hard and that means sliding and getting in the dirt on your knees a lot. Shorts just don't seem to make it.

I've been asking that same question OT. These girls can get real phyical, I don't know why more of them don't wear pants.

Thanks for the comments, as for pants vs shorts, I have no clue, but I do know it's "in the rules" here. The only thing I can think of is they are probably cooler than the pants. The girls have pants for their uniforms but rarely use them unless it's cold or wet, and then some don't wear them. The girls play harder than the boys most of the time, especially softball and basketball. Maybe I'll ask the coach tonight....oh wait, I'm shooting baseball, oh well.

I like the 3rd one ... got the catcher / ump / batter / ball all out of focus and the pitcher ... great shot ...

lol, nope, I didn't sneak off to the North woods although an almost identicle shot of this was in the paper the next day (Tuesday) here, and that one was mine. Kind of funny as the the way the sun reflected off the batters, catchers and umps helmets it looked like three Smileys looking back at me at different angles, and the pitcher had a mean look in the one that was in the paper. I saw her tonight at the games I was shooting and she loved the shot. This kid is a junior, stands 6' 2" and lifts weights and pitches every day, year round, even when she is sick. I think she has lost just 10 games since she pitched her first high school game as a freshman. She used to have trouble hitting though, you were safer in the dugout when she hit, now she has gotten the hang of it and she's hit line drives off the fence. Glad she figured it out, last year it was hazardous when she was at bat. She once hit 6 straight pitches line drive fouls over the street (one off a car) off thrird base side of the field, then put one in the dugout on each side of the field....dangerous!

Thanks DRG, the staff photog at the paper said he loved it.....and he rarely says anything about my work. He said he really liked the lighting, and I have to agree I couldn't have asked for any better lighting. The sun was setting when I got these. Now two papers have run the ones they were sent. All three were with different batters.

Saw the comment on the metering off the shorts not the shirt, can you tell me how you do that. I am having the exposure problems when I run into this very issue.

I like the pitcher shot as well..

I use single spot center metering, get the metering off the exposure meter in the viewfinder and set it one stop over center. In many cases the white or the BG may get blown out, but I'd rather have more detail of the pitcher than worry about that. In this case the sun was perfect, gave just enough light to not blow anything out and still get the details.
