Though I had a media pass, I still had to shoot through the glass, because they did not have holes for photographers.

seriously though, had you not had a press pass would they have let you in with the 70-200mm lense? I'd love to go shoot some minor league hockey, but I'm worried that they won't let me in with the "big" glass.

In Knoxville? Probably. I saw all kinds of cameras in the stands that night. These is a pretty small league (SPHL) and they want just about any exposure they can get. I don't know about other arenas and leagues though.

It was kinda funny how I got the media pass - I ran into the Ice Bears new media relations/sales person a couple of weeks ago - turns out that we worked together and were good friends years ago. She says I can have one anytime I'd like. Guess I got lucky.
