i sure as heck dont wanna find myself having to check my k100d and lense.
gonna have to do some checking before i go.
I got my 500 into Daytona and Watkins Glen easily enough. It is black and somewhat compact for a super tele, so I put my 14 - 45 on the camera to walk around until I got inside then I switched and put on the 50 - 500. No one asked me a thing. The guards even guided me into the stands so I woudln't get jostled around with expensive camera gear (kinda nice getting an escort to my seat lol) which most likely meant they were watching me.... but hey.. they let me shoot and left me alone.... so who's to complain?

The Canon white lenses stand out as they are the closest thing you can get to an industry standard for high end gear and they are definitely keeping an eye out for those. I didn't see a single one around that did not have a press pass attached to the shooter.

So basically they can take your image and not have to pay you for it from what I read there. So no worries.... take all the shots you want... but if we want them we can have them at no cost... .and if you sell them, we still have to give permission for them to be used.... but go ahead and shoot. Gotta love it lol.

Their not exactly hot right now and there was plenty of professional photographer space on the floor. Do you have to be affiliated with a known media conglomerate or just have the dollars for a media pass? I know questions, quesitons, questions.

PS. Thanks for all the feedback
Monkey, the Dragons are not semi-pro, they're pro--the Midwest League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, and you shouldn't have a problem. I've never seen anyone turned away from a minor league game because of their camera. I was the team photog for the SWM Devil Rays last year, and there were plenty of long lenses in the ballpark besides mine.

Ok now what did you say!
The credential says that they have permission to use images of ME in their materials.
Nothing about my imaging of their event.
I still have to look for more fine print, that was big fine print

Thanks for the Info, I do not get to many Dragon’s games, but have always had a great time when I go. There is no such thing as a bad seat in that stadium. Will definitely try and get there and get some pics. Glad to hear about the no lens restriction.

Is this print on the Gate Ticket or Press Credential?

The fine print your looking for may be on the race day credential or the the the paperwork you signed when picking up the credentials. I forget where it is. I know at IMS it's on about everything. I may be shooting this years 500, just waiting for confirmation from a paper that credentials went through....they are really cutting back though. I already know that I'll be shooting the 400 as I am the only photog for that paper to shoot it as the staff shooter won't do it Anyway I'll get a copy of the stuff and scan it this time so I have it. I'll add it here so it can be found easier. (I'll do it for both the 500 & 500)

The U of I has a "no pro gear" rule for basketball games. They restrict to P&S only. No removable lenses allowed. Drum Corp International has a 6" rule and doesn't allow posting of images, or even sharing with family if you follow the letter of the rule!

    Re: Illegal Telephoto Lens

I just discovered the forums here and the timing couldn't be better. I thought I was the only person with NBA-specific photography questions!

I go to a lot of Lakers games at Staples Center. I always had seats in the 300s (that's the top seating level, above the two levels of suites!), so last season I decided I wanted to get the maximum photographic bang for my cheap-seats buck. I had to weigh Staples strictly-enforced 'no detachable lenses of any kind' and '3.5" maximum lens length' policies against camera features and the clear choice was the Canon PowerShot S2.

All things considered, I don't think anyone could -- realistically -- be too disappointed with results like this. (Heck, the CBC even asked to link to the Steve Nash photo!)

Unfortunately, this season Jerry Buss rolled out a new "Lights Out" lighting scheme that is supposed to mimic boxing matches, with the lights in the stands dialed way, way down so all the focus is on the court. Now I'm lucky if I can salvage four or five good shots a game due to the excess noise. These examples required a heavy hand with Noise Ninja and PS and...splurging on bowl seats in the 100s. (I'm going to post a new topic for help on this problem.)

If you watch an upcoming Lakers playoffs home game next week you can even tell on the television how dark it is. Every other arena I've seen this season looks bathed in light, so no one else out there should have these problems (Clippers games still have the old lighting). I'd love to know how other Lakers fans are addressing this, too.

I found surprisingly little information on NBA/Arena sports photography out there so I hope this helps

    Re: Illegal Telephoto Lens

I'll bet Conseco Field House is darker now but then the Pacers are in the dark. It sounds like there will be wholesale changes, from the coaches on down, and possibly a higher up or two as well. Ever since that incident in Detroit they have been a different team, no respect for the rules of the team or league by the players. If it were me I'd just start over. But then I don't worry about them, it just irks me these people get millions and act like idiots on and off the court, and give Indy a bad name.
