good all-around 35mm SLR for Sports

Hey,

i'm getting into shooting sporting events and am looking to purchase a camera for all sports but mostly basketball and football.... i know that a nice digital SLR would be the way to go... but i'm a college student and don't really feel like droppin' 1K on a camera... also i'm taking a photography class next semester and need a film camera anyway...

so, anyways... i've shot some sports with a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and with a Coolpix 300 i think... and i've used the digital rebel and a couple canon slr cameras... so i have a little experience with canon and nikon....

any help would be appreciated....

I'd go with the new Canon EOS 30V with the batterypack/vertical grip thingie...
