Hello all,

Here is the first one of an experimental series I shot this week end. These are hand held with deliberate camera movements in order to achieve a dreamy/spooky mood I was seeking for.

Hi Seb,

That is indeed interesting. I like the green color in the back, and I think the overall idea is just novel.

But, this image just reminds me too much of folks who take snapshots at night not realizing that it will not turn out. I have two suggestions....

1. For this image, correct the white balance such that the tungsten light appears white. This may give it more punch and separate it from those failed snapshots.

2. Go for longer shutter speeds and work more of the camera path into the composition. I think this would also help differentiate it.

Did you know that you can set the flash to on the D70 to rear curtain? You can move the camera about and then just hold while you wait for the flash. The following shot is playing with this:

Thanks for the constructive critisism. I appreciate it. There is one thing I am not sure I understand though, what do you mean by:

Do you mean that I should give more movement to the camera to achieve a more dramatic effect?

You know what, I kind of agree that this could almost looks like a newbie mistake although I didn't composed shots like this as a newbie. lol My concept need some more work. Thank you for the information on rear curtain sync. That is a function I never worked with. Actually, I hardly ever use flash.

Here is an alternate take of the first picture I have posted (Tim, you might prefer that one).
I overlooked that one at first because I was more or less satistied with the tilt and the tighter crop.

This one was color corrected with WB for set for tungsten.

I like the angle on this one better Seb. It seems to me more like movement than just blur.

I certainly didn't mean to insinuate that your shot was "newbie". I've just seen a lot of unintended blurry night photos (some of them made by me!). So, please forgive me. I do get a lot out of the back and forth from these critiques.

I think your 2nd shot is much stronger with the two phantom images -- kind of reminds me quantum mechanics (geez, does that pigeon-hole me?). Correcting for tungsten also helps out.

Here is a picture of the D.C. skyline at night. The swirl is from a set of car lights that went by while I was making the exposure. I then applied the Swirl filter in PSE to try and balance the image.
