You can also make a levels adjustment layer after you create the layer effects. That will allow you to fine tune the brightness and even use masks in order to selectively lighten and darken parts of the image. masked adjustment layers are where the real power of Photoshop lies. They are where the actual "digital darkroom" tools that allow you to squeeze the most out of your images. I use masked adjustment layers on almost all of my photos.
