    A Painted House

I decided to play around with the Orton Imagery technique the other day. You can read more about it here. What do you think?

I like it also. It reminds me of a high quaility painting/illustration. I haven't read the article yet. It reveals how far behind I am in using post processing software.

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment. I'm glad you found the article interesting Gary! I tried to take a shot kinda like this using a double exposure on film a while back, but this way is much easier.

This is really interesting. Thanks for posting it.
A simpler method (for me) is

    Image>Duplicate image and close original
    Image>Apply Image Screen 100%
    Layer>Duplicate Layer
    Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur of copy layer
Change blend mode of copy layer to multiply
    Flatten

I find that on some shots using less than 100% Image Screen initially and then using less than 100% opacity of the copy layer reduces the mudiness of the final image.

This looks like old hand colored scenics.
Hope you don't mind my posting this pic in your thread.

Not at all Chunk. I did mine the same way you did yours. I set all the steps up as an action so once I get my duplicate image, I hit F2 and let the PC do the rest.

Michael, Chunk - You both have some beautiful shots here. I don't know how far photo manipulation should go, but these shots make me feel like it should go as far as a human can take it. Both well done

Beautiful image Michael!! (I like yours too Chunk!)

I've toyed around with this some, but don't have any images really that lend themselves to the application. But I will have to try again. Simply lovely!

Mike, I have to appologize. I shouldn't have posted my pic in your thread here on the Critique forum - I thought we were in Viewfinder.

I found I liked different amounts of blur for different photos.

Thanks D. Not all shots lend themselves well to this. I'll bet neon signs would work well but I don't have any neon shots right now.

    Hi Michael,

This is a really beautiful picture, and I have no critique to make. Until now I was oblivious to such a technique. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I do mostly B&W film (lately), but this gives me some ideas.

    Re: A Painted House

It's the opposite of an unsharp mask, isn't it?
I think it's interesting that doing it with two positives (not negative and positive) has such a different effect.

Unsharp masking (with film) used a blurred positive to unsharp mask the negative and increate contrast in the details.

As you can see from the sample images at the bottom, doing a real USM is very different from the USM filter in most software.

Gosh, I really love that effect, and your picture, Michael. The grass blowing in the wind really helps it too.

Thanks for the kind words Emily and Ken. I'm glad you found the article interesting Ken. It's a pretty simple technique and has some realy great results with the "right" image. Here is the original pic straight out of the camera.

Definitely the desired effect - that of a beautifully rendered painting.

    Re: A Painted House

It has a name! Cool. I explored the link, and played with PS until I acheived the similar image, then I realised that I had been doing something similar for a while, just to give my pictures a difference, like subtraction to pull out interesting hidden features in my work. But never got anything like the amazing detail acheived here.
    I like it. Its amazing.

Its surprising how we can get used to doing something over and over. I was close, but miles away at the same time.

Thanks for sharing the link to Ortens Imagry technique, its a whole new chapter on the possible things we can do.

    Cool deal

Thanks for the kind words Kizz. I'm glad you found the link usefull. I was going to have a large print made of this image, but my computer crashed before I had it backed up. The image posted here is the only version I have left.

Back up, duplicate and back up.

If you have the skills in PS, create a safety macro, Create new folder, duplicate images, save to new folder, close folder.

Easier said than done I am afraid for many.

If in doubt, Doo -Pli- Kate...
