Orton Effect Thread -- Post yours here
I noticed mention of the Orton Effect and looked it up. Pretty cool. It's a simple way to make things look dreamy in post.
Here are some current and past PR threads on it to save you the PR search:

In a nut shell you need graphic software that uses layers (as far as I know).
Make a second layer of your image.
Apply a guassian blur to the top layer and make the radius extreme between 10-15 pixels.
Apply the blending option 'multiply' or 'screen' to that blurred layer.
You should end up with something interesting.
So far most examples I've seen are 'nature' by topic but I think it makes portraits interesting as well.
Why not share your samples here :)

Re: Orton Effect Thread -- Post yours here
This one was inspired by the Micheal Orton book that I bought when I first got into photography. In his book he would use a 300mm zoom lens to take flower pictures. I took this one with a 200mm lens. I was trying to come up with something different than your Home and Garden picture of a flower. Remember this is when I still used film, and was very much a rookie. I was also the rookie at PS so this is very much as the negative scanned.

hey manacsa heres a link to the tutorial for photoshop
http://www.pcin.net/update/index.php...p-of-the-week/
basically you have 1 layer duplicate and set the mode to screen then duplicate the screen layer set the mode to multiply and set a blur to the multiply layer. really pretty easy but has some cool effects. works good for sunsets or any color you want to bring out. i usually use that but leave out the blur just to get colors to pop more.

The first one here is an image I made some time ago. The second I just did tonite after reading your thread.
Here's the site that was referenced by mjs1973 (I think) when he posted one that he had made.
http://www.naturephotographers.net/a.../dw0106-1.html
In PScs I do
Image>Apply Image>Screen100%
Duplicate layer
Gaussian Blur 25 pixel radius (usually)
Change layer blending mode to multiply
Then you can change the layer opacity to control the effect.
EDIT: I look more closely at the rest of the thread and realized that what I wrote just duplicated what others had posted - sorry for that...I'll go to bed now...(after adding a couple more orton images)

Wow this is fun! Makes the picture darker, but still good.

What a fun thread this is! Maybe we should have more threads with experimental stuff like this?
Both these images were taken at Hampton Court last summer - Hampton Court, near London, was a royal palace from the time of Henry VIII up to the mid 1700s.
Cheers

Are you doing the initial Image>Apply Image> using screen mode at 100% ? Without that step they turn out dark. Those violets will be really beautiful if lighter.

Roger, I like that b&w shot. The effect makes it look really classic.

King Edward Hotel, Toronto, ON the Crystal Ballroom, unused since the 1950s.
First photo is of the ballroom itself - set for 'screen' mode
Second is of the elevator bank - set for 'multiply' mode

Okay, so I was experimenting a little with the Orton effect. Subject is again the Crystal Ballroom.
I duplicated the photo layer, then the bottom layer I desaturated the colours and inverted them. Then did a guassian blur (radius 15) on the top then set to multiply. Got an interesting effect.
