calibrating monitor to match print with Epson 2200

Okay I have a question about calibrating my monitor to matching printing in PS...I have the Epson 2200 and a A90 viewsonic. For me to get the best print in PS in the print settings I need to chose the correct paper settings, under color management select ICM then under ICC unselect no color adjustment. My prints come out with wonderful depth. My question is, I'd like for my photos on my monitor to have the same amount of contrast/depth so I'll know how much I need to adjust the levels when editing my photos. I used Adobe gamma on my monitor and it doesn't match my prints unless I unselect ICM..when ICM isn't selected my photos match my monitor which are flat or drab looking...Would it be stupid to adjust my monitor settings while having a print in hand and the same photo open on my monitor at the same time so I can adjust my settings to match my print in hand? I'm a bit over whelmed. Thanks in advance.

The thing you need to do is calibrate your monitor. This is best accomplished using 3rd party calibration software/hardware combos.
I use the Eye1 Display by Gretag-Macbeth. There are quite a few different makes and models out there. Check some here: http://www.vistek.ca/details/results...gement%20Tools They consist of the software and a contraption (mine looks like a mouse with suction cups) that sticks to your monitor. Then you go through the motions and it spits out a profile.
I use a Epson 1280. If memory serves there are special settings you have to use especially for the 2200 due to it's use of pigment-based inks.
    Hope this is useful.
