    Wisconsin Cathedral

Much of Wisconsin's beer starts its processing here. When I was growing up this was always "the junction" or "the malt house" or "Ladish Malt". In recent years it has gone through several aquisitions by other companies but the guys that work there still work at "Ladish". Barley from the prairies is brought here and put through the malting process which allows the barley to gerninate. This causes the starch stored in the seeds to be converted to sugars and then the germination is stopped. The malt is then dried and shipped off to the breweries where it is proccessed into beer. All my life I've been looking at this building and not bothering to photograph it although it has always seemed a thing of ugly beauty plunked down in the middle of Wisconsin dairy farms. In the past few days I've started taking some of the shots that I've been seeing over the years. I think others around here (Jefferson) may be interested in some well composed views of the malt house so I hope you all help me to get the best shots I can.

    Re: Wisconsin Cathedral

I'm really liking the first image. The composition is great. Everything fits into the frame and it looks like a very well composed shot of an very large building. This photo has many elements that capture my attention like the smooth concrete cylinders and the realy ruff looking siding next to it...definitly captured the age of the building. The sky looks great...maybew a bit grainy or ove manipulated, but just a tad. The thing I llike most is the time of day you took this photo...very strong shadows on the building that gives it interest and depth.
The second one is not working for me...not a interesting as the first...my eye does not focus on anything and the time of day for this photo seems to be not right.
My suggestion is to get closer to the train and building for a slightly tighter shot, but I do like the diminishing p.o.v. that you have captured and would still try to work with that. I also would pick a time of day that has stronger shadows on the building...but that's just my mind thinking in B&W. ;)
great photos and can't wait to see more...
    Cheers.

    Hi,
I like the second shot because it contains many vertical lines from different elements and they from a theme of the picture. Was the training moving? If yes, I wonder what the shot would look like whith a slower shutter speed. Good shot!

Hi Chunck, what a massive subject to photograph. Composition of #2 is nice. #1 is a great shot but might be enlarged a little too much. I would love to shoot some structures like these.

    Really good Chunk.
I like the first shot. But there is some potential for a lot of more great shots in the right hand part of the building, with the windows and other thingies sticking out.
The moment I saw the second one I wanted movement in the train, as Yoyo suggested.
Chunk you have great subject matter here. I know what you mean by passing them all the time and now only getting down to photograph them.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan

Thanks for looking and for the analysis. These shots were taken about 10 minutes apart. Amazing what a difference in angle does to the lighting, isn't it? There are a few other shots of this in my Sunrise Service thread on Viewfinder.

Thanks Yoyo. The grain cars were just sitting there on a siding. I'll have to try and be there when they move cars around.

Thanks Dudley. Here's a wider shot. I thought the zoomed in one shows the most interesting part of the scene with a lot better detail. I think this shot is interesting as well but I like the textures in the first one better.

Thanks for commenting. When everryone was talking about their new years photo resolutions I kinda decided to try and take some of those shots that I've seen and not shot and also be more ready to stop and turn around and take the time to make a few shots when I see something as I'm driving by. So far I've been getting to meetings late more often than I used to but I like the shots I've been getting.
