    Dear Tuna,

I love the detail in the photo. The scrolling on the distant windows, the stones that make up the plaza, etc. What kind of film did you use? I am tempted to say that you overexposed the plaza, but I am not sure. I guess that it was either get the detail of the shadowed buildings or not at all ! Perhaps if the picture were sharper, the exposure might not worry me. I am not sure, so please exscuse my ramblings! Overall, great composition. One might be tempted to say that their is too much in the picture, but I think the mass of details is great.

    Good shooting,

    Dzerzhinski

Re: A Sunny Day on the Plaza

There is a great dynamic range in this pic! Even underneath the trees the shadows have retaines some info... Hence the question:

    'How on Earth..?'

    - split ND?
    - exposure combination?
    - or plain old fashioned dodging/burning in the darkroom?

Hope you will let us know!

Besides this 'technicality', the composition is pleasing and the pic is sharp.

However, I am sorry to say that it fails in conveying any particular feeling/emotion to me. I guess it is an accurate representation of the plaza, but among all the work you have posted here, I would probably not linger too much on this one. However, coming from old Europe where this architecture/scenary is common, maybe I fail being inspired by it....

Hope you don't mind me saying!

    Cheers,

    Steph.

I love the geometry of this shot and the way the light is playing off the lines in the plaza/ buildings.
I would have to say though that my eye really can't find something to focus on. I keep going between the plaza and the clouds, and back. I think the wide-angle with so much interest could have something to do with this.
Overall though, this is a spectacular shot.
Where is it by the way? Somewhere in Spain (Madrid or Sevilla perhaps??)... the whole scene looks really familiar.

To answer some of the questions -

Dzerzhinski - type of film - Cheap Konica color film converted to B&W. This was a "throwaway" from a while back that I tried to save.

Young Shooter, Steph - plenty of selective PS via masking - including dodge/burn, levels, curves, etc.

Chris - Taken from the Cathedral (on the way up, through one of the slit-windows) in Seville, Spain. Good eye!

Thanks for taking the time to comment and critique.

Ok, if this is your idea of a throwaway I'm doing something wrong. Its very good, it looks like a painting - especially the clouds!

I guess you are replying to my earlier comment!

Definitely not a throwaway! It's a good pic. for sure. It is just not working as a photograph for ME. But that's probably because I am quite blase with this kind of urban landscape.

Technically speaking, it is a great shot. Very good composition too.

But me and this pic ... we just don't speak the same language, that's all.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

This picture is very impressive. I think that it was well composed at the first place but your remarkable post processing skills truly take it to the next level.

    Dear Tuna,

For cheap Konica film, I would say the results belie its origins . I would say you rescued a potential throwaway. Great stuff.

It's been over 8 years since I was there. Man, I miss that city. Sevilla was definitely my favorite of the one's that I visited (unfortunately didn't make it to Barcelona or any of Valencia for that matter). I still remember the extremely bitter taste of the orange that I tried from one of the trees on the sidewalk... just plain nasty.

That shot definitely elicits a lot of memories (Thanks Tuna!)
