    Red Door

I was driving around with the wife last week, when we saw this little shed next to a house. We got out and spoke with the lady who lived there, and she gave me permission to shoot a few pix. Took this one very close up with a 28mm lens from ground level (hence, the distorted POV). Comments and critiques welcome. Aside from a bit of a crop to remove the driveway, and a little bit of unsharp mask, this is completely un-retouched.

Wow, what a great contrast of color. Love the red of the door, very vivid. A tad dark on my monitor (read: the branches, and near the roof) but probably just my monitor.

    Nice shot,

    Jared

    Re: Red Door

When I first viewed this image I thought of a few things right away that were "wrong" and my critque was starting to form in my mind to be put in type. Some of those things were the centering of the whole subject, especially the red door, the low point of view which seemed as if it could have been better standing higher up, and the strong color of the door almost making all else seem b&w, and the heavy contrast going one here. However, as I continue to view it I feel that it has that gritty hard edge feel that works and that includes the breaking of certain "rules" There is no refined or subtle aspect of this shot, and I find that entertaining and therefore it works for me. It is as if this barn just came crashing down right in front of you , knocking you to the ground and here we are looking up at it as it is demanding our attention and boasting it's Red Door. (hmm , there i go, thinking again)
To sum it up, I like it for all the wrong reasons

Nice shot FadderUri. I think the POV in the shot is the one a person might have if he had been sippin on the moon shine a little too much. Awesome contrast.

Yes, it looks a bit dark to me too, have you checked the levels? It would be nice to see more of the grain in the wood.
I think the perspective works well, the low aspect, converging verticals and slanting boards really say "this thing is about to fall down!"

Great shot! I really enjoy the crooked, abruptness of the composition. You pull it off well in this shot, it's fitting. It's a building to be reckoned with. It does look a little dark around certain areas, trees and some of the boards but I think the attention is pulled inward toward the door so it's not going to ruin this pic.

    Cheers!

Thank you very much. It's not your monitor, it is a bit dark. As I stated, I did minimal retouching. Here is the same shot with a few adjustments in Levels and Gamma Correction. Let me know what you think.

Ummm... thanks, I think. I liked it for all the "wrong" reasons you quoted in your response. It made me think a little bit of the house in The Wizard of Oz that took out the Wicked Witch of the East. Here's one for you that I took from a standing position, slightly off center. Let me know what you think.

Hmmmm.... Is this the voice of experience talking? Thanks for the kind word.

I did some levels adjustment, along with a bit of Gamma correction. See the second version I uploaded and tell me if you think that's a bit better.

Thank you Rebekah. I kinda liked the funky POV. Like I said in my reply to Gary, the finished product made me think of The Wizard of Oz.

    Re: Red Door

I only meant that the shot breaks some rules, but works for me for those very reasons. The rules can be broken if it works. Wizard of Oz house. . . kind of goes with how I felt like it came crashing down in fron tof you. The second shot you posted is good as well. It is more a traditional composition, and i like the tones achieved.
