    Pears in Monochrome

Comments and critique welcome. Just pears this time. No pottery.

Here it is again, and I must say, it looks a little more austere ;) . Thanks for all the comments. Very much appreciated.

    Re: Pears in Monochrome

I go away for a few days and there's all kinds of good stuff to look at and comment on!!

The pears are very well arranged, lit and situated in the frame and short of measuring and applying some arcane formula, the negative space to subject appears just about right on.

Two minor quibbles, theres a darker band across the entire top of the image I'd lose or brush out. Second, a simple framing would really enhance the overall photo.

I want to return to your pottery shots (I still plan on shooting some if I get time!) and see what you've posted in the past week or so.

Oh I do like this! Especially effective is the very plain background and the off-centre arrangement. It's the kind of picture that makes me want to scurry into the kitchen to see if we've got a few pears to do my own variations on your idea.

    Cheers

(PS just checked .. no pears - just a couple of satsumas

I like it. Good grain and "feel" to the overall image - well done. I don't like the frame, though. If you feel it's necessary due to posting white-on-white, a neutral (gray/black) frame might work better.

I like this also. It works and then I feel is spoiled by the frame which is too overwhelming by far.

I also like this, but I strongly echo the comment about the frame overwhelming it. Also (and I may be in a minority of 1 here), I find the positioning of the group as a whole a little too high within the frame. It makes me a little uncomfortable seeing more room underneath them than above, and so personally I'd prefer them either bottom left, or centred in a square frame. Nice work

    Re: Pears in Monochrome

Too much frame, the thickness is my problem this one. The color is not complimentary. With B/W or monochrome photos sticking with black or silvery/grey frames seems to usually work best. Or so I've found.

Still bothered by that band across the top of the frame of the picture, I'm working on a different system (new*(&*#$) and I'm having trouble saving images and editing. Some parameter not set properly, so I may have to go to another machine to do what I want later.

You might try a thin frame, 5-15 pixels thick with no shadows or try a drop shadow.

Framing is often playing around to get what looks best within some simple basic guidelines. The frame shouldn't overpower the picture, it should compliment (color, shade, material, etc) the picture, and it should guide the eye. Yeah, like all this is easy!

    Re: Pears in Monochrome

Thanks everyone for your comments and criticisms. I probably should have thanked everyone earlier, but I didn't want to interrupt the flow of things . It looks much better thank you very much drg, Tuna, etc.

Didache, satsumas would work . Just start shooting and you will find things start to look better. Actually with these, very little manipulation was required to get the effects. Curves, grain, and channel mixer on monochrome. This does not always work though (see my pottery series). Good shooting everyone.
