    Out on the Lake

    Hi all,

I've posted a few from this set of shots before, but rummaging through my old shots I found some ones that I may be able to use for a project coming up. Just would like your thoughts on composition, levels, etc. The first one is my *attempt* at abstract, so please take that into consideration. As always, all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated!!

    Re: Out on the Lake

The first shot is awesome. I have no idea what it is but I could stare at a hires version for ages. Is it bubbles?

Second shot is so-so. I think it would have been better if you'd have taken the shot with the crack in ice on the right hand side of the photo, dividing up using rule of thirds. It seems to disrupt the flow of the image.

    Cheers,
    Chris

    Re: Out on the Lake

I agree with what Chris said. I really like the bubbles frozen in time photo. It's very intreaging (sp). I have seen one of these shots before that you posted in another thread, but I still had to look twice to see what it was. I really like the crack in the ice in photo number 2, but it's directing my eyesy right out of the photo and making me miss the magnificent background. I like Chris's idea of starting the crack along the right side of the photo. This might help lead the eye to the bg, instead of away from it. Just my 2 pennies.

Bubbles - awesome. Would look great blown up big. Maybe crop the bottom right a bit. Fill the frame with the bubbles.
Crack in the ice - I agree with the Hindey and mjs.

    Re: Out on the Lake

I think the realization that bubbles form in ice is pretty wild and this pic does capture it. But it somehow seems to lack being more that a documentation photo. But don't fret - shots taken close up like this provide good information and are often the best shot available. However shots that tell a story are sometimes more interesting in the longer run.

The bottom shot is interesting but the first thing that I thought was, did he walk on the ice? It's a decent shot but the lack of any clouds in the sky makes the top third a bit too simple. I like the mountains.

Believe it or not, I was roughly a kilometer from the nearest shore in that pic. Just strap on some skates and just so skate with a tripod and camera in hand! Interesting points about the clouds!

    Thanks alot,

I think you did well as a abstract print on number one. I enjoy the repetition of shape, form, color - with enough mystery as to exactly what it is to be interesting. The second is really fascinating with a great background of scenic beauty -- good job Jared. The more shots you take the more you learn and the better you get ;)

Thanks Aaron. Appreciate the comments. Living up here in B.C. provides photographers amazing scenic shots and beautiful weathering affects also.

    Great place to live,

Jared, I agree with jon about just cropping off the lower corner where ther is space to fill the frame with the bubbles. the second shot looks clean with nice dof, i only find the composition to be lacking some. The horizon is too close to center and is slightly tilted. But it does have a good feel to it. I commend you for your commitment to be out there on the ice, which is a dangerous venture, especially if your alone.

Gary, thanks. It means alot to get a response from a forum veteran as yourself! As about being on the ice, I had nothign to worry about. There were quite a few dozen people out in the middle of the lake where this shot were, and thankfully, none we're in my shot! But after roughly two weeks of -20 degrees Celcisus or lower weather, I felt prettttty safe on the ice!

Thanks again though to everybody with their comments!
