Newbie - heres a few piccies to introduce myself

Hi everyone - I'm new to these forums and thought I'd make my first post one to give me a *hopefully* new perspective on my work.

So please - thoughts and comments welcome.

The first one is a portrait of a lady called Emma - taken in a studio a while ago - theme for our shoot was "Silent Movie" although this one did deviate from the theme a bit.

Second one was taken at a friends wedding - the little girl is the brides daughter.

Third one was a shot I did for a local band's gig poster.

Fourth one was me playing around with exposure bracketing - not sure if its a good shot or not.

What are your views - I'm going away soon and I think maybe a new perspective would do me good!

    Thanks

    Nicki

First of all, Welcome. You chose some very good shots for your first post.

When looking at these before reading your message, I thought "That looks like a 1920s portrait".
I don' t know how to judge album covers.
I like the sunset. Not everyone likes them exposed to get silouhettes but I do. I like that there is a bird in the sun's reflection. I might like it a bit more if the sun wasn't centerd horizontally.

    welcome Nicki!

I like your piccies very much. The first one is exactly what you were going for. Like Chunk says, right out of the 20's. It's really a lovely shot. the vignetted one, in my opinion, would be nicer if the oval was a little wider, seems kind of tight. Also, it would have bbeen a little better if she wasn't looking at the camera. My absolute fav is the album cover. I always look at the pics first before reading the post. When I looked at that one, I immediatly thought of an album cover! Point is - you're right on there! Even faded looking is good! The sunset, not bad and I like the sillouette look also.
On a whole, you seem to be drawn to subjects that look good in black and white. It's not easy to make them look right, but you have the nack.
    Have fun on your trip.

Looks like these could just use some post-scanning work--I'm guessing your pritnts of these photos look better than the ones you've posted here? I took PSP to your fourth one and set the bottom area as a black point. I think you'll agree that it cleans things up.
Your band one looks kinda grainy, though maybe thats just the scanning again--what speed film are you use?

    HI Mike

Thanks for looking at my pics - film speed for the b&w i always use either 100 or 125. With the band one the reason that its grainy is i had the film processed by a different lab to my usual one - who wrecked it - it got all mashed in their machine and half the images were shredded - after i got it home this was about as decent a print as i could get from it. As I am no pro with PSP i kinda left it at that - funny enough the band were stilll happy with it and used it on their pro mo items for their gig, as a very new photographer at the time - i was very worried about the image but they loved it.

For what it's worth, our graphic artist at work likes grain, he says it gives an "edgy" feel to the image that he can work with and bring out in PS when he makes the final image for the magazine.
I reckon you've hit waht you were aiming for every time there, the film starlet pose is spot on, the 3 guys screams out to be an album cover, and the sunset is gorgeous.
