    Hey guys,

How's it going? Well, after lurking on this site for the past few months I guess I finally got the courage to post for the first time. I just wanted some critique for this photo. I have about 175 from this 'voyage'. But any questions I can answer I certinaly will. All comments are greatly apperciated!

    Thanks in advance,

Hello Jared, welcome to the board!

Where was this shot? I like your composition and how everything seems to take place so naturally. I must say that the sun detract me though. It is just so bright that too much attention goes to the right side of the frame. I would suggest to wait at dusk or dawn if you absolutely want to include the sun in such a shot. Otherwise, it is oftenly better not to directly include the sun in your frames. you may want to totally exclude it or there are also situations where you may use an object to hide the sun and get interesting lighting effects (CB Photo recent shot of a cemetery in Normandy is a great example I think B&W shot from Normandy France).

    keep them coming!

    Seb

Great link, thanks again (sorry I didn't put it in my first post!)

    Thanks,

One of the skaters in the foreground to add a sense of depth would have been nice. They are so small that they seem to be an afterthought. The sun could have been a little lower to reduce it's dominance in the pix. Nice try...keep on shooting. For heavens sake don't let anyone dictate what your "style' should be.
There is no accounting for taste....especially mine!!

Thanks CarbonTerry for your words. Your right, some sort of object in the foreground certainly would've higlighted depth here.

    Thanks,

    Jared

    Hello Terry,

Aren't we basically saying the same things in different words?

    Hey jar_e. Wour welcome.

Your second picture looks good to me. I think that you might have waited for the skaters to be closer to you (not zooming in as it would reduce deep of field and lessen the visual impact of the greeat background) to make that shot but it still works well as it is.
But then again, the size of the picture that we post here is small. Chances are that the skaters would be just fine on a print of a decent size).

    regards

    Seb

Thanks Seb. Many shots taken on these were spur of the moment, trying not to have them focus on the camera, and just let them skate. I agree though that the depth of field could've been reduced. Oh well, maybe next time

    Thanks again,

    Jared
