    My first thread - Brickworks

    Hello everyone,
this is my first post at photograpy review, actually my first post on any forum.

The photo I have posted I took in early winther 2010 in Aalborg at an old brickwork. It was taken with my panasonic lumix lx3. I have been so fortunate that a friend of mine displayed it at his café. But even though people generally liked it I haven't realley had the chance to get any critic from fellow photographers.

My thoughts when I took the pictures where that I wanted to capture the mood that I had when I explored this place, the feeling of decay and times past.
I am not sure if I maybe overdid the contrast and sharpening on this picture as I did tweak a lot of settings in post processing.

    Thank you
    Daniel

Welcome to the forum. I like this location, it looks like there is a great opportunity here. In this shot, I'm not so sure where I should be looking though. There are a lot of separate elements going on with not much to link them except by the location you state in the title.
I do think the b/w treatment is the way to go on this location.

I agree with Arne. There doesn't seem to be one clear subject- I'm not sure if I should be looking at the building on the the left or the object right in front of me. Overall I like the mood- very gritty and raw. The processing is ok- I think b&w was the right choice, but the contrast seems a slightly off IMO. Others with more experience may disagree with me there. Welcome to the forum

I like the two barrels and what looks like cement in the FG, attractive shapes with great texture and contrast. I feel that the top 1/3 of the image is blown out, lacks detail and takes away from the really nice bottom portion of the sky. There is no seperation between the left FG object and the building, they seem to blend together. This has them fight for attention and neither on can have it. This image has good elements, just too many.
    Welcome aboard, and keep sharing.

The hot spot in the cloud is distracting. Some very careful tonal healing and recovery could help. If you brought down whites too far, the original may have more color in the cloud. I find the rocks and foreground hues excessively bright, I'd push midtones and low tones down a bit.

    Thanks all for the critic,
it was all very helpfull, especially since I until now haven't been too concious about considering composition before hitting the release. You where also right about the sky beeing blown out. I think you guys helped me a lot here. Tomorrow I will be photographing a concert, which will be very challenging in terms of composition and lighting.

Welcome to the boards, Dan. I see that you're from Denmark, so you're practicing both your photography and your English.

I like your shot in several respects. The composition is unconventional, as the scene is partially by the structure in the foreground. But they are interesting, so I think they add to the photo. When one looks beyond that , we see the very prominent light pole, which seems futuristic. I don't know why, but I think of the movie Fahrenheit 451 here (I think it was shot in Germany). The left side building looks great, though part of it is blocked by the structures and is out of the frame. In general, it's like we're standing on the ground on our toes trying to see over those things, and I think it works. Sometimes photos tell a story or have action, and this one certainly does.

As far as criticisms, I really have none. It is what it is, a good documentary type shot. It works, and I do like the sepia tone. As far as over sharpening, you are on the edge there: I might back off a little. Try to get it as sharp as possible when you shoot it - a tripod really helps.

    Again, welcome to PR!
