    Diverse Landscape

60 degrees again...Despite having attended university on the Palouse for four years, I'm still amazed at how diverse the landscape is.

    Re: Diverse Landscape

I love your shots! They're great! The only problem I have is the haze that you seem to get from the long distant shots. Whether this is smog/dust, or if it's just the fact of the subject being so far away, the background almost becomes an after thought to this picture. For example, if the mountains we're a tad more darker in the first pic, that would be great contrast.

It's hard to fix, I've endured the same problem, but you never know what you can do in Photoshop!

DownByFive, all of these are excellent compositions. I really these second, third, then first. I tried a levels adjustment on these and wow, what a difference. You should try using the levels adjustment on these, they need it. If you would like, I could post one of them with the adjustment done. Great shots.

How would you adjust the levels for the hay rolls pic? That one was sort of frustrating me because the sky starts to blow out pretty easily...

Here's my attempt. I basically got the right slider as close to the right end of the histogram as possible, so I guess that should mean that the sky isn't actually blown out...

Here's the approach I took. Is it any better or is it just different?

    Re: Diverse Landscape

I used to use "Levels" exclusively for adjustments. Then, I started inserting a 21 step grayscale into the pix. Wow, Levels starts to clip highlights and shadows almost immediately where as "Curves" lets you do a lot of correcting without clipping. Of course it depends on the original image. Try working with Curves and you will find that you like the results better after you become accustomed to using them.

    Re: Diverse Landscape

The blue haze in the original serves to differentiate between the foreground and the far objects. By reducing the haze I have flattened the scene considerably. I can't find a middle ground here that I like.

    Re: Diverse Landscape

Thats a good start. To me , the sky although bright, does not distract in a blown out way. Here is a simple level adj with a bit od dodging and burning.
