graveyard series in b&w - photo #1

I took a trip to a graveyard in concord, mass today. i ended up spending some time with a particular grouping of tombstones and trees. I have about 3 or 4 different shots that I liked from the bunch, and I'll post them as I get them ready to show. This is the first one.... thoughts?

Were you shooting medium format for this? The direction of the lines in the picture moving from the top right to bottom left is a positive aspect. The DOF and contrast is quality. I think that the lighting gives it a feeling that you'd want from a shot in a graveyard. I'd like to see the others, definetly.

To answer your first question, no I am shooting digital - a canon digital rebel actually. The cropping absolutely gives it the feel of medium format, from what limited exposure I've had to that format. I worked on the cropping for a while, to get it just so.

From your reaction, it sounds like I may have gotten the feel "right". I wanted to convey that graveyard feeling, but didn't want to focus exclusively on head stones - I wanted something a little atypical if possible. f4.5 if I remember correctly, intentionally focused on the tree to highlight it while minimizing the stones...

I like this alot as well. Good point of view, exposure, contrast, and the square crop works nice. The only thing I would have liked to see a bit differently is to make the tombstone in the bg left portion of the frame stand out a little more. Just to make it more readily noticed. Had the scene been shot with you standing a little more to the left it would have put the top of that tombstone against the bright sky allowing its shape to stand out more dramatically as opposed to it being in front of the dark area behind it. I don't know if it would add to this scene or not as you have already done a fine job with it as it is. Great work, looking forward to seeing the rest of them.

Hello Stew,

I definately like your work a lot. This last picture of you clearly remind me your fountain shot (although they have a totally different subjects). I guess that this is your personal signature which get easily noticed regardless of what you are shooting. I don't feel competent to actually criticise your picture. I honnestly don't see how I would improve it.

I can understand your comment about that particular stone. I had noticed it myself when going thru the adjustments. I tried to bring it out somehow, but the information was simply not there in the photograph, so I couldn't do anything about it. cool that you noticed it too

Yes, I realized how similar this one was in flavor to the fountain shot when i shot it. Thanks for recognizing the similiarity of viewpoint.
