    Ocean Sunset

It has been a very long time since I have posted in critique, but I do visit often. I escaped the cold weather and made it to the coast (in between storms) and had a wonderful time - and a ton of pictures later. I finally had the opportunity to take an ocean sunset picture. Something that I have wanted to try for many years. So, with D100 in hand I sat on the beach and shot away. Making many adjustments to come up with the effect I liked. I am hoping for any suggestions to find out what else I can do to improve this shot.

    Nikon D100
    Aperture Priority
    Spot metering
    1/250 sec F/16
    +.3 exposure
    ISO 200
whit balance set for Direct sunshine

That is a quality sunset shot. It look just right to me. The warm colours are spot on.
Is the horizon line "an hair tilted" on the left??? I am not sure if my eyes are playing me tricks or not.

I'm seeing the same thing, just a tad higher on the left then the right. Beautiful shot, and good thing you used white balance! Wonderful shot and love the wave breaking right in the foreground, nice shot.

Thank you Jared, Seb and ARP for the comments. Yes it is tilted slightly...something I'll have to fix. I was told one time that that curve is the curve of the earth...that amazes me. But it would definately be better if I leveld it out.

Beautiful image Toot well worth the time and effort. Very nice exposure and the colors are gorgeous. The placement of the breaking wave is very nice and IMHO makes the photograph. Very nice thanks for posting.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Thank you all the the words of encouragment. Like I said, it was something that I have wanted to photograph for a long time and finally had the chance. I am glad to know that I am on the right track.

Seb and Jared.....I got out my ruler to measure the horizon line out of curiostiy. It is so close to being level I had to laugh...at least on my monitor. Definately an illusion. Thank you again.

    Toot,

Technically perfect, or almost perfect (not quite at third pt, but who cares). The colors are nice but probably could use a little more red, but unless you want to put on filters or adjust in paint s/w, the only thing you could do would be to try another day.

Shots like this are always nice, but next time, it's time for you to try another angle, like a child in the foreground making a sandcastle, or the shore at the bottom adding a third aspect to the photo (and a different color), or some rocks/a lifeguard stand in the right part of the shot. These type pix are much harder to get the lighting right, time them with people, etc. but that's the challenge. These types of pix will hold up over time (the viewer will not tire of looking at the shot). Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. I am planning on trying to get back over to the ocean next spring, and spend a couple days. I understand what you were saying about getting people or something in there for another element. The only things that were on the beach are the baby elephant seals. They wouldn't co-operate to well, plus it was getting too dark. I did take pictures of them the following day. Right now I was just shooting for the sunset and water. Living in the desert, it's nice to see water. Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it very much and it will give me another goal.
