A tighter crop centering on the void between the woman and the boy would be my choice.

As for the fingers, showing what you did does want me to see the entire hands. So cropping in closer (I'm thinking to about midpoint of the forearms) would not hurt.

If you feel unfortable shooting in such conditions, you could always shoot with the camera on your chest. Dial in more wide angle so that you can crop later and hope the camera autofocuses on your intended subject. Somewhat hit-or-miss but people's expressions tend to look more natural.
