After a day of hiking....

Hey all,

After a day of hiking in the backcountry with our ski's and snowboards, we finally found a jump worthy of taking pictures. After a full day's shooting, at roughly 6 locations, I have two favourite shots. As always, comment/critique is welcomed and appreciated.

Didn't see the 2nd one. Beautiful 'scape. Like the leading into the distance.

Nice control of your brightness and color in what looks like reflective, stark lighting. I agree that you have some room to play around and crop (crop IN?) the first image.

Thanks Jon and Tuna. I appreciate the words as always and glad to see a positive response. Just out of curiousity, what kind of crops do you suggest? I tried around with it a bit but couldn't get anything too sturdy (On a tighter crop, it almost looks like he's balancing on the lip of the mountain). If anyone can PS it and show me what they think would work I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hello Jared, this is serious stuff!!

I like both of them for different reasons. I think that you caught the action with the right timing for the first one. Having the snowboarder agaisnt the clean mountain framed by the trees makes for a very clean and graphic composition. The colors, the highlights and the shadows are very well rendered too as mentionned Tuna.

There is a great perspective effect in the second one. I feel drawn inside the shot. Having such a clean (haze free) time help a lot too. I can somewhat relate to my Banff pictures from last summer were the fog/haze diminished the impact of the mountains. You nailed it with this picture. The curvy shadow of a tree in the foreground also add to the overall impact of the picture.

Here's two takes on the boarder.
I thought what was missing were 2 things. Horizontal frame and panning motion. You were right about him looking as if balancing on the peak.
Either that or tighter framing and larger aperture to cause more BG blur.

Both are quite good. I'd like to see the boarder in the second shot and even tried cloning him in. You may want to try it for kicks. If you were to crop. I'd think abotu getting rid of the ground altogether. It might look like flying, like this...

don't be so hard on your self jared, those were great.

I specially love the second one, the layers are just great. first the snow then the close by trees then the further back trees then the further back area then the mountains then the sky. Wholy moly, that's like 6 different depths captured very well very beautiful shot man.

Edit: If you're surprised by the acceptance, I wonder what else you're holding back

Better to take the pic than try this stuff! I like the first one better, but the second looks like the perspective of the snowboarder.

The only suggestion I have is to get/zoom even closer. But of course the chance of snaping the shot at the exact time and place might mean no good pix like this one Plus you'd have to use a faster shutter, calculate the distance exactly (small DOF) and so on. May be worth a try though.

Thanks for the words. This was the one shot I zoomed in on, and it worked greatly. All my other ones we're far out, but I'll definately try tighter zooming!

Be proud of these because they are two great shots. The first is a brilliant capture which I feel does not necessarily need much cropping at all and the second is a lovely portrait of a beautiful landscape.

I wont bother commenting on the photos as everone else has covered what I was about to say - other than I'm green with envy. We have snow for the last three nights and each morning its a little white and then at noon its gone. Bah Humbug!

Trust me, snow isn't always a fun thing to deal with! This is probably 3,000 feet above sea level, so snow doesn't disappear easily (and having a streak of cold doesn't help it melting either). Beautiful place to live though.
