We've got at least one active member who lives in Mexico, armando_m. He lives in Guadalajara. You should ask him. That said, I went to Mazatlan this spring and it was fine. Yes, I saw a lot of cops with guns. But I never felt afraid. I'm no expert but I think most of the problems are on the border, where the drugs and money are changing hands. I think it's pretty safe once you get down into Mexico-proper - especially touristy areas like Cabo.

border towns are problematic even for locals

it is being a long time since I've been there, but a friend just went there - last week - and had no problems at all
