Ah yes, I do have the diopter adjusted for maximum sharpness.

I just checked out on my D300. It's in the "spanner" Custom menu with space for 12 lenses. You just fit the lens and keep on making adjustments and tests till it's spot on.

I think that you need something very precise and the D300 (and upwards) is the tool to do it. You can go a long way with amateur material. I love my D60 but for difficult tasks there's only the more sophisticated material that will do.
    Hi Charles,
Exellent article. That procedure does not look to complicated.
As I was reviewing the d300 my mouth really started watering. Sealed water tight mag housing. Oh my!
Thank you again for the help. Something tells me a d300 will be in my future one day.

Looks like we have solved your problem! I don't drink beer but if you have any spare lenses or cameras you want to donate, send them my way. It is a shame you didn't bring this up a few thousand pictures ago. These pictures that you have just posted are excellent as far as focus. This should cut down on some of your stress and save a repair bill or money on a new purchase, Jeff

You said you have no focus issues with your d80.
May I ask which lens/lenses you are using and what do you usually shoot?

I mostly shoot wildlife and landscapes.
Similar. Mostly wildlife and landscapes and travel scenics.

The lenses I seem to have settled on are:

    14mm f2.8 Sigma
    19-35mm f3.5~4.5 Tamron
    50mm f1.8 Nikkor
24~120mmf3.5~5.6 Nikkor VR AF-S - this is now my main lens. I just moved to it after selling my 28~200 Nikkor, because I wanted the VR My copy is better than this lens' reputation would have you believe.
    70-210mm f2.8~4.0 Vivitar Series 1
    200-400mm 5.6 Tamron

I also use a couple of older manual focus macro lenses: a 55mm f3.5 Micro-Nikkor AI and a 90mm f2.5 Tamron SP AI

Wow! Nice collection of lenses to choose from Doug.

So far my back focus issue has not come back and I am quite happy with how the camera is performing now.

Nikon really should improve their explanation of the AF lock switch in the manual.
I was board at work and I did a Google search for "d80 back focus" 13 pages of focus issues came up. :-(

It's a bummer they did not have Jeff to help them out like I did.

Re: d80 owners that upgraded to d90's ???

Those lenses didn't cost me all that much. The only lens that set me back more than $250 was the 14mm f2.8 Sigma, which cost me $400 plus shipping brand new. A lot of the other lenses were bought used.

The 24mm-120mm VR zoom cost me $250, and the others all cost me $100 or less. I have never been a big fan of getting the newest stuff. By buying all that stuff used, I could pretty much sell anything I was unhappy with for around what I paid for it. In fact, when I bought the 24-120mm VR zoom, I actually sold 2 lenses that it replaced for $450 (my 28-200mm Nikkor and my 24mm f2.8 prime, which I was surprised to find after some careful testing that it wasn't any better than my 24-120mm zoom and my 19-35mm zoom at 24mm. I had actually tested several inexpensive Sigma lenses in the 18-80mm range (an 18-50, a 28-70 f2.8~4, and a 28-80, and I didn't like any of them enough to keep them - they all went on ebay. The 19-35mm Tamron (which cost me less than $60) and the 24-120mm Nikkor VR were much better.

That is an exellent way to build a lens collection. I have been buying used as well. The only new item I purchased was the 70-300VR and I got that for $400 [poorly listed ebay win]

The places I go and the method I get there can be hard on equipment. I never want to say to myself...I better not take the dslr because it might get damaged. You can't get the shot if you are always worried about the cost of the loss.

He's posted in several forums. Just one-line entries with a pointer to a commercial site. But there are some eagle-eyed readers out there who report the thing to the moderators within the hour.
