    Speedlight Question

Sorry if this is a repeated question. I did a search first but didnt find what I was looking for.

Im shooting with D200 and a SB-600 speedlight

I just got the speedlight not to long ago and I since figured out how to set it remotely. yay!

    my question is

When I use it remotely my pop up flash still goes off. Is this supposed to happen?

when I first got the d200 I thought I had done something so the flash did not fire even though the pop up was up. Could have been a dream though.

    Re: Speedlight Question

The D200 flash has to be set to commander mode and the DB600 has to be set to slave mode and both have to be set to the same channel.

When you press the shutter release the flashes go through the preflash sequence then the real thing, all in a fraction of a second:

    1. The D200 flash goes off at reduced power and sends a coded message to the slave to get started.
    2. The camera observes the result, via the exposure meter which is still active because the mirror has not yet flipped up.
    3. When the camera judges that the subject has had enough light it shuts off the D200 flash - which the slave flash notices and shuts down.
    4. The camera calculates the aperture, and the length of time necessary to let the flashes run to get perfect exposure
    4. The camera flips up the mirror, closes the lens down, opens the shutter and sets off the D200 flash but this time at full power, with another coded message to the slave.
    5. The slave goes off at full power
    6. The camera shuts off the commander flash after the length of time calculated
    7. The slave notices that the master has shut down and shuts down too
    8. The camera closes the shutter, flips down the mirror and opens the lens to full aperture

So normally both flashes should go off twice, though the interval between the flashes is so brief you might not notice it
