400 2.8 question

whats a reasonable price for a used 400mm 2.8 ED IF AFS lens? found one for 4000. is that a decent price? thanks Dustin

Are you talking about the II version or the previous model? The list price on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED II was/is $6700. That being the case, $4000 sounds reasonable if the lens is in good shape. And since there is a VR version out now, it also seems reasonable for someone to be selling one.

Have you checked eBay final sale prices? That's one of the ways I figure out how much used stuff is worth. You can also check the B&H, KEH and Adorama used departments to see if they're selling one.
