    I have a question

I have a few photos I took while at snowmobile races. The first photo I had a wide angle lens on my Nikon D80 with my Sigma 70-300mm lens, this was not shot on the sports mode. The second one was not taken without the wide angle lens on it. Why did my first photo turn out frosted on the edges and the second one didn't?

Lemme rephrase that. The second was taken without the wide angle lens. Oh and there was no moisture on my camera to give it that effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am unclear with what you are saying? A wide angle lens with the 70-300mm? You mean you had an attachment on the lens? The 70-300mm is not considered wide angle. Or do you mean wide open aperature?

    Molly,

I think your refering to a form of filter which gives you a wider angle from your zoom lens, I could be wrong. If this is the case then you would get distortion on the limits of the picture as most of these lenses cause that.

    The package reads:
Digital Camera/Video Wide Angle & Telephoto Lens Set. Does that help?

    Re: I have a question

Hi Molly, Let me clarify with you the differance between wide angle and telephoto. Wide angle most would consider is between 12mm to 28mm. Telephoto would be considered anything on the larger side like 200,300 and so on. Anyway, The second picture looks like you used 70-300mm but at the 70mm range but you were closer to the subject matter. But I could be wrong. The first looks like you were a litter father away and zoomed in to the 300mm range and your metering was probably set to spot metering which would explain why you ended up with the "Frost" like effect around your subject matter.
If you are using a telephoto lens at events like this where you can't get close to your subject matter and you have to zoom in say to the 300mm range, try setting your metering mode to dynamic. Either way, at the 300mm range, your going to get some kind of "Frosted" effect the more you have to zoom in and the father away you are from your subject matter. Esspecially on "Spot" or "Center-Weighed" metering modes. Try getting closer to your subject matter and not zooming in so far. I know you can only get so close though at events like this. You might try using "Dynamic" metering mode also. Hope this has helped.

    Re: I have a question

All my photos from the first day (wide angle lens on) were like the top photo. The second day I didn't use my wide angle lens. The settings had been the same for both days. The second days photos were all crisp and clear, no matter the zoom. I am just wondering as to why the first day came out frosted on the edges, the only difference is is that I took off the wide angle lens on the second day. I am so confused as to why my photos came out the way they did on day one.

    Re: I have a question

If you are putting one of those wide angle adaptor, attachments, on the end of your lens that is more than likely the cause. Can you post a picture of it? Anytime you put glass in front of glass your image will suffer. I would suggest if you want wide angle just use a wide angle lens as stated above.
The second picture is awesome. Nice work. Sometimes it just takes trying things to see what works and what don't.

    Molly,

These are filters that you put on the front of the lens. The picture shows that these things screw onto the front of the existing lens.

With these you can expect to get distortion in the picture especially at the edges.

If you want wide angle or telephoto without distortion you have to get a camera that accepts different lenses e.g. DSLR, where you have a body and then buy the appropriate lens. Expensive but you get what you pay for.

    Re: I have a question

Don't use the any wide angle adapters, yes there cheaper than the real thing but the image quality will suffer. Just purchase a real lens, the 17-70mm Nikon DX is a nice lens but the 17-55mm Nikon DX some people like better, either lens will give you standard wide angle of 35mm equivalent of 24-25mm to 75mm(55mm) or 105mm(70mm) to short telephoto. The 50mm (75mm, 35mm equivalent) length is a grate portrait focus length .
