    Turkey Vultures

Driving through a state park this morning after I got out of the kayak I noticed a very large group of birds hanging out on the beach. I assumed they were Canada Geese since that is the direction a group of them had gone while I was in the kayak. Once I got close enough to see, I realized they were all turkey vultures. I had never seen that many TV's in one spot before. I tried to sneak up on them to get a shot, but they all took off before I was able to get set up. I counted 55 in this image.

There must be something pretty big there to attract so many. - Terry

Neat! Must be congregating for migrations of their own. Probably a large thermal in that particular area - was it shot in the morning?

Interesting that your trees seem much greener and fuller than what we have here. Some of our trees are already turning color and many are loosing leaves. We had an exceptionally hot and dry summer.

QUITE A LARGE GROUP. We have a few groups of 25-40 in my area, but most groups are far smaller.

Yup, this was in the morning. A lot of the trees in the photo are pine trees, which is why they look so green. There are some hardwoods right along the shore of the lake that have gained some color over the past few days. Color is still kind of spotty here and should only get better.

    Re: Turkey Vultures

The morning ritual seemed to be to hang out at the beech and take a little dip. Then dry off in the sun, and start riding the thermals. I was kayaking on this lake again this morning and watched several TV's fly in from the north. They all landed in the same tree up on the hillside that is shown in the first photo.
