Taking a break for a while

Hiking in search of barred owls this afternoon during a brief blizzard, I slipped on ice beneath fresh snow. Since I always sling the camera over my right shoulder, I turned to my left going down and held the monopod with both hands.

Landed squarely on my left forearm and my head hit the ground on one side while my camera/lens simultaneously smacked the other side of my head. Hiking out the rest of the way then driving home wasn't too fun.

Fractured and splinted for now. The specialist will assess tomorrow. So no new photos from me for a while. But I still have some images from the past few days to process and post.

Glad you're still moderately OK though. This time of year can be quite dangerous, especially with all that snow and very slick ice. There are also hidden "holes" under snow banks which aren't too kind on ankles. I have had a few close calls recently.

Hope you recover soon and get back into action. I know several years ago it snowed here and we had some snow drifts as high as three or four inches in places and it got to be dangerous to maneuver in the slick stuff, Jeff :cryin:

I did ask the casting technician to splint it in the position my hand/fingers assume when holding a camera. She laughed and said "no" without any humor.

Probably a good thing as the left hand holding an "air lens" is quite gruesome looking

Sorry to hear about your fall. I took a hard one a couple of winters ago on black ice in the parking lot by my office. I hit on the elbow and was sure I had a broken bone but x-rays were negative. Had a lot of swelling and had to be drained a couple of time, seemed like it took forever to heal.

Now for the good new Loupey. You will now discover that your camera and lenses are equipped with auto focus and with the assistance of a mono pod you need not miss a shot. I have also found that children make great assistants to carry equipment and a short lesson will teach them to change lenses like a pro.

The good news is that you will take the time to heal properly, your arm will return to it's full range of motion, your camera and lens survived the fall and now the rest of us get 6 - 8 weeks of time to catch up and improve our skills while you stagnate on the couch =P

Ooooo bummer, my friend! I broke a finger last may and it still makes the occasional sickly crunch noise...lesson learned, stay off the broken stuff to let it heal!

Time to turn on the auto focus...I'm sure it says in your instruction manuals somewhere how to do that. Your cameras probably have two or three types of autofocus, including one that will track the subject. WOW!
Anyway, set it to center point, and point the reticle at the thing you want in focus. Now for the tricky part: half-press the shutter button. The lens will then automatically bring the subject into focus. This might take a while to get used to, but within a week or so you should be able to use autofocus with ease. :ciappa: :Yawn:

Sorry to hear about your accident Loupey , looks painful one thing that will speed up your healing is to try and not check to see if you can lift that 500mm and your 50D more than 3 times a day lol .

Autofocus?! What if it works? What if I like it? I would have thousands of threads to edit in which I gave much unwanted advice.


Oh, I forgot to set the scene earlier; the woods were utterly quiet and peaceful, the snow was still falling in slow motion, and not a single other person could be seen nor heard. Then with me on my side, I swear that my sudden burst of swearing made flocks of previously unseen birds take to the air, deer peer from around sycamores, and squirrels scamper up trees. I'm sure that watching a pile of leaves fall, wiggle, get up, and stagger away was the strangest thing they saw that day

Just caught your thread Loupey and I'd like to pass on my sympathy. My advice is stay well away from snow, its bad ! The only place for snow and indeed any weather phenomenon that takes place below freezing point is the television.
Thank god your camera and lens were ok is all I can say.

Update on the situation: the meeting with the specialist was postponed until yesterday. The fracture goes through the "knuckle" of the radius (the long forearm bone on the thumb side) at the wrist. The good news is that the doc gave me my elbow back so I think I can still handle the 500mm if needed
