    Little help? Guy was caught just after a dive from about 30 feet, where he actually hovered for a bit before plunging. Gull-size, maybe smaller. Beak screams "heron" to me, but nothing else does..... Especially the size.

    an eastern towhee i stumbled upon at Lyonia preserve. He was eyeing the scrubjay who had run him off his breakfast

    somebody els echeck me on this . I believe its a Belted kingfisher. I'm going off the mark in front of the eye / black beak and the black hood it has. If im reading the coloration correctly the brownish color on the belly makes it a female

    Well, looking up that bird, I believe you've got it. Thanks.

    The page I've used for searching for birds is here, but the pics are small, and the pic for this bird was the wrong color (blue crest, fluffed up on the head.) Had I read the description by the pic, it says "hovers above water to search," which is what I observed. Had I actually clicked the link to go to the actual page for the species it would have been obvious, but that one tiny image isn't what I saw, so I skipped it over.

    no problem I love my little book called Birds of Florida by Stan Tekila. Fits in your camera backpack. Send me you address if you want i have a place down the street that carries it . I can send you a copy. Sometimes this book is hard to find.

    a bit interesting as i have lived in Fla my wholelife and dont remember seeing this bird. Kinda weird considering they live here year round

    I got another hover/diver a few weeks ago, but the picture is really bad. Identified it as a Least Tern. Black mask with white across the forehead.

    looks a bit dark for nashville, but the lighting is dark too.yup, that's a young tanager...oops
