    Rufous Hummingbird in the cold

This dude is one hardy hummingbird. Picture was taken over the Thanksgiving holiday at my cabin in Virginia. The temperature when I took this was probably 40 but it had been 29 that morning. Sunday, he came back to the feeder and it was 20 degrees when he was feeding. I checked the feeder thinking it was frozen solid, but it was slushy, so he was getting some food. He visited us in early November last year, but by Thanksgiving he was gone. Maybe the weather has been milder this year, but it appears to me that he had best head South.

    wow ! great shot

Isolated, the wings are 100% frozen, and not overexposed by the flash
