    Banded Water Snake

Found this guy in a tree today. He was sunning, and let me pick him up. I grabbed a few in hand shots them put him down near his lake. He posed a bit then went home.

    Nicely done. Cool looking snake.
Hand holding and macro focusing must have been a real challenge?

It was more of a challenge trying to get him to look toward the camera...

But really, it's not that bad actually, if you have a lens that can focus close enough. the hard part is trying to hold the camera steady with one hand, and the subject with the other.

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks Paul!

She/He was very docile. It never even opened its mouth, much less trying to bite. I have heard that these snakes are rather temperamental, but I would never have known it from this one.

As to the sex, I do not believe the species is sexually dimorphic, and both sexes are heavy bodied. It was not lethargic like a gravid female, and I doubt a gravid female would have climbed into a tree. I usually just go with he/him as a descriptor because it fits snakes so well, but without sexing it I don't really know for sure what sex it was.
