    Question Upgrade

Im new at this... my name is Jenny... and I have a problem....

Forgive my non-technical vocabulary, im self taught and i just know how to make my camera work i do not know what anything is called, but anyway... if you can fallow...

I have a Nikon N65 and im looking to take better pictures... i have sold 2 photos on basic equipment, and im looking to upgrade as far as a lens goes. Id like more range (long distance), and also i would like to get closer detail. Problem is i dont know where to start and Im pretty poor... any sugestions?

well "poor" telephoto means a sub $200 70-300mm to me(prices are from B&H photo video)

could you explain closer detail? Do you mean more frame filling close up shots( macro capability) or maybe you mean sharper optics that pick up more detail in your subject?

    Re: Upgrade

then , depending on your current gear and subject matter, a 70-300 should be a good addition.

    Re: Upgrade

A 70-300 can be OK but some of them tend to get a little "soft" at the long (300mm) end. As you probably know, long telephoto lenses can get expensive (like new Hyundai territory) really quick!

Another good fairly inexpensive option is the Tokina 400mm f5.6. This lens isn't made anymore but I've used it and it's quite sharp, especially for the price. Make sure to get the auto-focus option which usually sells in the $200 range on ebay from time to time. Of course, this is a "prime" lens - in other words not a zoom. It's only 400mm. I have heard that some older Tokina (as well as Sigma and Tamron) lenses have problems some times with newer cameras. You probably won't have that problem but may want to email Tokina (www.thkphoto.com) to see what they say.

A tokina 400F5.6 ATX will work fine on a N65 from my experience. It works great on my old N60 and F100
