Canon Bodies - When is it time to upgrade from the Rebel?

Just give me your opinions. I'd be going to the 10D... The rebel is fine for me now, but when would I want to jump? I have all these canon lenses... so I figure I'll stick with it.

So what do you think? I really don't have enough experience with DSLRs to know...

When you need the responsiveness of a faster body

The tools are all there on the rebel. I don't think you're gaining much going to the more expensive 10D. The only things I can see you gaining from a 10D are faster exposure compensation control via the thumb wheel in the back, and a more robust camera body. Otherwise, (I could be wrong), isn't the rebel and 10D pretty close to the same in terms of ability? If you really feel the need for an upgrade, then REALLY upgrade, to a 1DMkII or 1DS. I really don't think the price difference is worth the upgrade to a 10D. You could sock the difference towards a really nice lens (70-200mm f2.8L IS comes to mind) instead and be better off. just my $0.02

I upgraded from the digi-rebel to the 10D

Here are my reasons (not in any particular order):

    Metal body
    3fps (9 frame buffer)
    Focus hold (One Shot focus)
    Spot metering
    Flash compensation
Shutter sounds more like my film cameras
    Mirror lock up
    PC terminal

If you can live without these features, I would stick to the rebel. Both cameras produce almost identical picture quality and the rebel is $600 cheaper. You could get yourself a nice L lens for that amount of money. But, I like shooting sports, so the 4 frame buffer on the rebel was just not working for me. I also shoot quite a bit and I felt the metal body would be a little bit more durable. Hope that helps.

    Regards,
    Ivan

I'll be honest here, since we're all friends ;)

All that turns my crank about the 10d is:

    -9 shot buffer.
    -prestige.

Is that worth 600 bucks? I dunno even what the rest of that stuff is.

    That's pretty funny.

I would say that since Canon comes out with a new DSLR every five days or so, and that they will probably put out their "reply" to the Nikon D70 at some point soon, I would wait a bit.

The Rebel seems to have all the image quality of the 10D, and I bet that the next Rebel or 10DII/20D/10E or whatever will be better than the 10D and $500 or so less.

All black does look a lot better, though, doesn't it? ;)

"I really don't have enough experience with DSLRs to know..."

If the above sentence doesn't clarify it for you, then let me, YOU'LL BE WASTING 1500 BUCKS if you upgrade. The buffer stuff is just ridiculous, I shot for a year with a 3-6 frame buffer and made money off of it. If you feel the need to waste money on toys, don't let anyone stop you, but why would you want to if you don't even know WHY you should???

As for the prestige, are you a 12-year old trying to be the coolest on the block? If so, then why not just mortgage the house and get the 1Ds? With that sort of attitude you'll never be happy because there's always something better that you'll lust after.

You are wasting valuable time that you could be out learning about photography so you could answer this question yourself.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

So I gather you're voting against an upgrade. I may be 12, but your subtlties are not lost on me ;)

    Hehe, yeah, you got it.

May I make a suggestion? Keeping your equipment in you signature lines can create lots of unnecessary hits during searches for an item that happens to be in your sig. If someone needs a thread about a particular problem, they may now have to wade through your posts even if they have nothing to do with their problem. Leaving the info in your profile might be a better idea.

I am 13 by the way. Finally made it into my teens...

If you have to ask, then you probably don't need it. This is true of bodies, lenses or anything else. If you're having a problem with the equipment you've got and there's something out there that will help fix it, then go for it. Being a Nikon guy I can't comment on Canon specifics. If you were shooting sports professionally and kept missing your shot because of slow AF, then maybe it's good to look at a different body. If you shoot often hand held in low light, then maybe an IS lens will help - you could shoot at f2.8 with non IS or maybe 5.6 (or higher) with IS for a little more DOF.

It's a question that only you can answer.

If those are the reasons, don't upgrade. Definitely not worth it. It also sounds like you haven't shot with the 10D yet. That's definitely something you want to do if you're going to spend 1500 dollars on it.
