Extended Warranties? to buy or not to buy?

I'm about to purchase a Canon Eos 20D from Ritzcamera.com

I just had a bad experiance with a Sony camcorder that just randomly crapped out after 1year and 8 months of use. Sony wants $269 to repair a camera that cost $599 list, that now has a street price of just over 3 bills. This experiance has left me with a seriously bad taste in my mouth regarding Sony, especially considering I've only filled about three tapes with video footage.

Now I'm thinking I should just bite it and drop the dough(from now on) on the extra warrenties Four hundo for two years though is pricey. My powerbook's apple care plan was less than half that...

So, what do most people think? Is the extended warrenty worth the extra cash?

I've added around $1.5k of photo gear on my home policy. I can trip and break the camera. They'll replace w/o deduction. Adder was $27/year. Check it out.

Personally, I think the extended warranty is a scam. I don't think I have ever bought one for a piece of electronic equipment, and luckily, I have never needed it. I have purchased them for 2 motorcycles in the past, and they both paid for themselves. That being said, I'm a lot harder on my bikes, than I am on my electronics. If you haven't done so, read the reviews for the 20D on this site, and see if there are any problems that seem to come up a lot. If there is something that pops up alot, I would consider it, but if not, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Make sure you shop around. I have always found Ritz, to be overpriced.

    think about it this way
would you as a company offer a warrantee if you knew your product was going to break down? You dont need extended warrentee. Plus with advancing electronics, fixing old stuff is simply not worth it

IMO, for the price of a Mack extended warranty you can't go wrong. I bought one for my XT. Mack is a very reputable camera store and has been an authorized Canon repair for many years. You can purchase a Mack extended warranty for Canon products anytime within 30 days after you purchase the camera regardless where you got it.

You can buy the warranty from any of Mack's authorized dealers. However, if you purchase it from the dealer where you got the camera, it's usually at least double the cost. Mack has a list of authorized dealers that sell the warranty on their website. I purchased mine from Compuplus. They are very easy to deal with and I got my warranty the next day.

I've never bought one, but then I usually buy camera equipment used anyway. Both my Rebel digital and 10D were bought used, as were most of my lenses. I've never had a problem with any of my cameras, so to me the extended warranty doesn't make any sense, even if I had bought the equipment new.
