    Wich Lenses for Canon

What makes are avalible of lenses to work with a Canon 20D looking genarally at fast lenses to use in low lighting conditions. Also must be autofocus, EOS lenses seem a bit pricey or can any one sugest a keen supplier.

    Re: Wich Lenses for Canon

I have ordered new 20D and have the same problem, therefore I am thinking to buy 17-40 f4 L. I alredy own 28-70 f2.8 L USM and 70-200 F4 L-USM and they are the best quality lenses worth of every penny. For 20D with 1.6 magnification the natural combination is 17-40 F4 L which gives fast AF and quality images, other-wise new EF-S 18-55 which comes as a kit with 20D might be an option but this is not very sharp perticularly at wide end and below F8 see [url]http://www.photographyreview.com Third Pary lense will cost less but then quality is not there. For good price on 17-40 try [url]www.7dayshop.com and I think their price is lowest in the UK market.

What are you looking at in the way of focal lengths?

If you're after a fast, reasonably priced lens, take a look at the Sigma 18-50 EX. It's F2.8 all the way, and it works out to be a 29-80mm lens on the 20D (note: it can't be used on cameras with larger sensors). The RRP is £370, but you could probably find it a bit cheaper than that.

Alternatively, there's the new 17-85mm EF-S that Canon have released to coincide with the 20D. Whilst it's not too fast a lens, it does compensate with Image Stabiliser technology (a claimed 3 stop reduction of camera shake). The Canon lens is priced similar to the Sigma.

You absolutely CANNOT go wrong with the 50mm f1.8 Canon EF lens. Its not only fast but its remarked as one of (if not the) sharpest non L glass lenses available. To top that, its price is unbeatable, at around 75 dollars at BHPhotovideo, you simply can't beat it. Also note that on the 20D's 1.6x crop sensor, its effectively an 81mm lens.
You should check out the canon digital photography forums, you could find tons of info there on quality lenses. www.photography-on-the.net/forums

Reponses Photo magazine this month has a test of "standard" lenses for the Nikon D70. This includes some fixed focal length lenses like the Nikon 50mm f1.8 which is even more of a quality reference than the Canon lens.

To everyone's surprise, all the fixed focal length lenses except the 85mm came out AWFUL when used with the D70 (the designed-for digital lenses like the 18-70 kit lens came out really well)

Next months issue they do the same thing with the Canon 20D. If the results are the same then I'll write a short summary.

Edited to change "Chasseurs d'Images" to "Reponses Photo".

    Hi Genko,
can you provide us with some information on what kind of pictures you want to take? Sports/action? Portraits? Wildlife? Scenics? General purpose? Close-up? Knowing what you want to use the lens for will make it easier to advise you on choices...

    Regards,

    Re: Wich Lenses for Canon

Hello! I am also looking for a fast lens for my Canon 20d.
I have the 18-55 kit lens, capable of a WHOPPINGly unremarkable 3.5 f.stop. Which is about as handy as a kick in the teeth in low light conditions, especially if you intend to zoom in at all.
IS there such thing as a fast lens (at least 1.8) that I could use for portraits and macros, or are they mutually exclusive? This is my criteria (in order of priority) for a lens, any help would be ...so, very appreciated. (maybe you can kill two birds with one stone here? -Me and Genko)

    -Compatible with Canon EOS 20D
-Must be FAST (1.8 or faster)
    -Auto focus
    -For portrait photography
    -For macro photography

Budget is up to about £200 / $300 I guess. (There seems to be loads of choice for way under that doesn't there?)
In advance, Thankyou all so much

    Re: Wich Lenses for Canon

Well Genko, if you look at the lense reviews on this site you can pretty much see which ones are the better ones based on peoples reviews and ratings. I just bought a 20D, which is coming to me actually today! I bought with it a 24-70mm 2.8 along with the 70-200mm 2.8 USM (non-IS version). They both seem to have high ratings and are fast. I will in the future, however, add the 35mm 1.4 L. You can substitute the 35mm for the much cheaper 50mm 1.4, but the quality in optics and construction is not as good (according to people's reviews). The 35mm should prove very handy in low light photography, without having to sacrifice either shutter speed or ISO. There's also a 50mm 1.0, but there are mixed feelings about this lens, and it's very expensive (due to the large aperture). Good luck!
