4 Megapixel file size

I have a Pentax s4i which seems to be working fine. But the highest file size which I have recorded is 2.8 Mb. At the highest resolution and at the highest quality I can not get anywhere near the 5.33 Mb size which Pentax quotes as being the file size at high res. Is my camera faulty?

You are using the jpeg format for the files. JPEG compresses the file to make it take up less room.

Is there any other format I can select. I can see no options for TIFF etc. - only Jpeg.

Many of these cameras do jpeg only. Some have raw format, a very few have TIFF (very large).

The difference between the highest quality jpeg and something like raw are almost exactly the same to the eye. What you want to do is save the jpegs as they come out of the camera. When you decide to work on them, immediately save to TIFF before doing anything. Jpeg loses something everytime you save the file, it gets progressively worse. TIFF is lossless so you can save as often as you want without losing anything. Only do editing on the TIFF files.

I am still puzzled as to why Pentax estimate a file size of 5.33MB per image at high res. when there is no way that the camera will record a file so big.
