View Full Version : My Wife Just Bought Me A D200!
Speed 05-01-2006, 10:01 AM Not ten minutes ago, she called a company called epix and told them she was interested in a D200. The salesman replied "You and everyone else!" Turns out they had two, one of which was on ebay (which was how my wife found them). So she bought me the other one. It will be shipped out today, with a 4 to 7 working day shipping time.
I'm so giddy right now I can hardly see straight. ;-)
Looks like I'm going to be getting a crash course in digital SLR photography.
For those that may have noticed I haven't been around much lately, I have been incredibly busy. We've had some changes at work, which have meant more work for me (with no more pay of course). Also, I spent three days last week in Raleigh at a National Conference, where I also was a presenter. The week before that I spent three days in Cedar Point for training. So it's been a busy time. But never fear, I have not dropped off my favorite website!
Here's the link to the ebay D200 if anyone is interested:

I guess this means we should be expecting massive amounts of photos of Dawn? :D

It depends on what your definition of "massive" is!
;-)
shutterman 05-01-2006, 10:37 AM Congrats speed! Now you need to get the handbook - "What to do with my film camera when my D200 arrives!"
Have fun. You will love it!
Sebastian 05-01-2006, 10:53 AM I'll give you $20 for your F5. :D
Congratulations Speed! Wow! FINALLY! :D :D ;) ;)
You will LOVE digital! I'm looking forward to seeing your first images........
Really cool camera btw - (take into consideration that I only use Canon)!

Fenilyn 05-01-2006, 10:54 AM With Image sensor features high-speed 4-channel data output and a newly developed Optical Low Pass Filter,10 megapixel CCD sensor, interchangeable lens, ISO 100-3200, JPEG and RAW file formats, 2.5 inch LCD, 1.81lbs. What can you ask for?
Good for you shutterman. You'll be more occupied now taking pictures.
Lava Lamp 05-01-2006, 10:56 AM Nice!
When I read the title of the message, it didn't show who posted it, just the last person to reply and I thought: "That message can only be from Speed." And it was.
How lucky can a guy be? You must have been a saint in a former life. :D
My local stores haven't had a D200. I was in Columbus, OH last week and drove past a store (Cord camera) that had one and I got a chance to shoot with it some. It is an awesome camera and easily beats the D70s in every respect. It is very solid and professional looking, too. You will love it.
They only had it with the 18-70 kit lens, which I didn't need, plus I had just bought a nice (used) 17-35mm AFS, so I took a pass. I'm jealous, though.;)
Lava Lamp 05-01-2006, 10:57 AM I'll give you $20 for your F5. :D
I'll bid $25.
Sebastian 05-01-2006, 10:59 AM I'll bid $25.
...You win. It was an impulse buy anyway. :)
Lionheart 05-01-2006, 11:02 AM Congrats, you lucky dog. I've been contemplating finishing my journey to the dark side by switching to Nikon, and the D200 is the one on my list. Post a review and pics soon.:-)
walterick 05-01-2006, 11:06 AM CONGRATULATIONS SPEEDO!!
The Nikon family grows ever stronger!
Speed 05-01-2006, 11:37 AM Congrats speed! Now you need to get the handbook - "What to do with my film camera when my D200 arrives!"
Have fun. You will love it!
Continue shooting with them, of course!
I still need a SB-800 after all.
And a new computer.
And I still have more than 50 rolls of print film and 10 rolls of slide film.
But I do expect my film shooting to drop off quite a bit in the near future...
Speed 05-01-2006, 11:38 AM I'll give you $20 for your F5. :D
DREAM ON!!!!!!!
;-)
Speed 05-01-2006, 11:40 AM I'll bid $25.
You are a funny guy!

Yeah, it's been a long time coming. And I'm not there yet. Still need a couple of CF cards, a SB-800, and that new computer. Hopefully by the end of the year, I'll be all set.
I just hope Rick hasn't written me off as having gone to the Dark Side....
Speed 05-01-2006, 11:45 AM With Image sensor features high-speed 4-channel data output and a newly developed Optical Low Pass Filter,10 megapixel CCD sensor, interchangeable lens, ISO 100-3200, JPEG and RAW file formats, 2.5 inch LCD, 1.81lbs. What can you ask for?
Good for you shutterman. You'll be more occupied now taking pictures.
A pair of 2GB CF cards, a SB-800, a HP Media Machine, and when I win the lottery, a D2X as a "backup" camera!
;-)
Thanks for the comments.
Sebastian 05-01-2006, 11:45 AM DREAM ON!!!!!!!
;-)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. A month with the D200 and you'll see LL and I were being generous. But by then it'll be too late, as the money will have been spent on ice cream. Creamy, delicious ice cream.
Mmmmmm.
Speed 05-01-2006, 11:55 AM You know me too well my friend! ;-)
"How lucky can a guy be? You must have been a saint in a former life." :D
I wouldn't go that far, but God must love me to have given me the wife He did!
"They only had it with the 18-70 kit lens"
Yeah, I noticed that B&H only had the D200 with the 18-70mm lens. I clicked on "notify me when available" on the camera body only, and got a message "Due to unprecedented consumer interest we are unable to add any additional correspondents to this list. Thank you for your understanding."
We also checked with Adorama and KEH, and they were also out of D200's. ASAP Photo still has two slips hanging where folks have already paid their money and are waiting for their camera's to come in. Finding one is tough. Which is part of why the wife decided to go ahead and get the camera first. She just couldn't see the price of the D200 coming down anytime soon. So I'll be using her computer for downloading my images. I'll just have to try to keep it reasonable and edit heavily. :-O
Thanks for the comments my friend!

Woof! Woof!
;-)
"I've been contemplating finishing my journey to the dark side by switching to Nikon, and the D200 is the one on my list."
Come on over! The Nikon Samurai's will gladly welcome you to the fold!
From everything I've heard and read, the D200 is THE consumer grade digital SLR to have. It does about 97% of what the D2X does at a third of the price. I am looking forward to getting mine. Once I learn how to use the thing, I'll be sure to post a review, and of course, images. :-D
Speed 05-01-2006, 12:07 PM CONGRATULATIONS SPEEDO!!
The Nikon family grows ever stronger!
BUT,... my wife did buy me a D200.
;-)
I'm anxious, excited, giddy,...you know the drill when waiting for new gear.
The wife sees me shooting a lot less film (as do I) but I've already told her that I will not be giving up slide film though. Hey, once you're used to the finer things in life, it's practically impossible to give them up!
Thanks for the comments buddy, and you, surely, knew that when I got a digital SLR, it would be a Nikon! N80, F5, Coolpix 5700, D200, the list just keeps growing.
BTW, did you get your replacement for your Coolpix yet? What did you get?
Old Timer 05-01-2006, 12:17 PM Gee Wizzzzzz!!!!! I'm off here for a couple of hours and something like this happens. I was beginning to think that you were never going to make the jump to the dark side. Thank goodness for Dawn!! Someone in the family has the good sense to know it's time to come to into the digital age. I loved my N80 and the 6 other Nikon film camera that are now gathering dust, but I felt like a veil was lifted from my eyes when I got the D70 and then the D2H added the speed and pro features that I dreamed of. The D200 is big on my list now but will have to wait for a while. I am so happy for you Speed. This will be like you just discovered photography all over again. I can't wait to start seeing your daily post with the D200. Keep us updated on how you plan to repay that beautiful wife of yours.
dbutler 05-01-2006, 12:30 PM Show off!!! And we wives take far too good a care of you boys. Ok, truth is I'm absolutely green with envy. Even if I am just gathering dust on both the D70 AND the F5 at the moment. Sigh.
And what's the deal of coming to Raleigh and not letting me know?? I hope you enjoyed your time here.
Speed 05-01-2006, 01:08 PM Yeah, yeah, yeah. A month with the D200 and you'll see LL and I were being generous. But by then it'll be too late, as the money will have been spent on ice cream.
Mmmmmm.
Hey, I'm all for ice cream buddy!
Creamy, delicisious, ice cream.
Yum!
;-)

Can't turn your back around here. Shoot, I haven't even been on the forums for a couple of weeks, and when I came back, I came back with a bang.
" Thank goodness for Dawn!! Someone in the family has the good sense to know it's time to come to into the digital age."
You are right. Dawn does have the good sense. If I had good sense, I wouldn't have gotten into photography and I would have saved thousands of dollars. Thank God I don't have good sense! ;-)
" Keep us updated on how you plan to repay that beautiful wife of yours."
Can do. She wants me to have the rest of the sidewalk done. (It's partly concrete and partly patio stones) So that is my number one priority now. As for the rest of the repayment, well, this is a family forum, but use your imagination. Then multiply it by a factor of five. :-O
Thanks for the comments and the encouragement my friend!
walterick 05-01-2006, 01:18 PM Yes, my Nikon family got a new member last month too. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to the grandaddy digicam in order to say hello to the newborn coolpix :)
Hey, while you guys are upgrading to digital SLR's, I'm busy at the bottom catching all the medium format deals that keep popping up. Everytime someone buys a DSLR, the price of a used Mamiya gear comes down $1. Keep buying guys! :D
Enjoy your present Speed! I think know who your first post will be a picuture of ;)
Speed 05-01-2006, 01:33 PM No arguement there D!!!!!!!!!!
" Ok, truth is I'm absolutely green with envy. Even if I am just gathering dust on both the D70 AND the F5 at the moment. Sigh."
That's OK. I was envious of you when I found out you had a F5! Turn about is fair play. ;-)
"And what's the deal of coming to Raleigh and not letting me know?? I hope you enjoyed your time here."
Actually, I replied to a post of yours about three weeks ago telling you I was coming up that way. Suggested that you and the husband join us for dinner one night. I guess you never read it. Next time I'll send you a PM. I still have yet to meet another PR photog in person! Of course, if you and the husband want to come to the beach this summer, we've got a five bedroom house.....we're 20 minutes from the beach.....we have a boat.....
We did enjoy our time in Raleigh. I HATE sleeping without Dawn next to me, and I do not sleep good when I'm away from her. It was wonderful having her come along.
Thanks for the comments D!
Ronnoco 05-01-2006, 04:07 PM Wow! I certainly hope you showed your wife due appreciation for the wonderful gift and appreciate what a treasure you have in a partner.
Ronnoco
Well done mate, do u find you love your wife more now ! o/j i'm a canon man but if i could i would carry a nikon (colours are much better) make sure you put a very fine camera to good use and put the pics up on here :)
paulnj 05-01-2006, 07:31 PM Too bad it doesn't take canon lenses, but we'll let you slide ;) That is a [B]VERY[B] sweet camera pal! I think you might be able to get that flash if you take Dawn with you next time too ;)
Now you can send me images more frequently ;)
Hmmm, dont spose you'd be interested in swapping a D70s for a D200 ;)
Giving all the credit to Dawn, eh? Could be she knows that you're a man among men!
Congrats to both of you! I'm sure you'll be making thousands of family memories with it,
Mark.
OldSchool 05-02-2006, 05:40 AM Have fun learning it Speed. In the end, I think you'll really appreciate it. Burning CCD is a lot less commitment than burning film. I think you'll end up more creative as a result.
Cheers,
Tim
p.s. Lava and Seb, you guys crack me up.

I don't know if it's possible to love her anymore than I do! But if it's possible, this is the sort of thing to definitely appreciate and love her more than ever.
Thanks for the comments!

Trust me, I do! She is WAY too good to me. More so than I deserve, without a doubt.
And I've already begun the showing her my appreciation process.
;-)
JSPhoto 05-02-2006, 12:32 PM Congrats Speed .... although my first thought was really " :D :D My Condolences :D :D " due to it being a Nikon  .
My second thought was....
Hmmm, theres what I need, a wife to buy me more Canon gear! :D
JS
mtbbrian 05-02-2006, 12:43 PM You are indeed a most fortunate Nikon Samurai my friend!
I look forward to seeing the many fine photographs with your new Nikon.

Speed 05-03-2006, 05:06 AM "Hmmm, theres what I need, a wife to buy me more Canon gear!" :D
Every man should have a wife like mine!
And I mean that. She is my wife, my friend, my confidant, my companion, and far and away the best thing that has ever happened to me. Frankly, I'm not totally sure what she sees in me (she says she married me for the sex) and I can't believe she spoils me like she does.
Let me repeat myself:
Every man should have a wife like mine!
:-D

Why Paul, whatever do you mean?
;-)
I've got to get the flash now. Hmmm. Maybe if I take Dawn to Myrtle Beach for a weekend? Melting pot for dinner, hottub, massage at the day spa, ...this could work.
Speed 05-03-2006, 05:15 AM Absolutely! I give credit where credit is due.
"Could be she knows that you're a man among men!"
Maybe. Or maybe it's because I make her laugh. Maybe it's the way I hold her. Maybe it's the slow, passonate kisses. Oh, who am I kidding? It's the sex!
:-O
Speed 05-03-2006, 05:17 AM "...a D70s for a D200" ;)
Tempting as that sounds, I think I'll pass.
;-)
Thanks for the comments Tink!

Thanks for the comments buddy! I'm looking forward to learning to use the D200. Can't wait to start using histograms, and playing with white balance, etc.
I'm also looking forward to not having to worry about having film developed.
And for the record, LL and Seb cracked us all up with their comments. Dawn laughed so hard when I told her about their wise cracks.
Speed 05-03-2006, 05:24 AM Yes I am!!!
And spoiled rotten to boot.
;-)
Thanks for the comments Brian.
:-D
racingpinarello 05-03-2006, 06:38 AM Congrats there buddy!!!! It's a great camera and it feels like a pro camera. So far I've been really impressed with the camera.
Make sure you update your software with the newest updates so it can read the new D200 files. Oh...can I offer $50 for the F5, and $10 for the film. Just look at this way...I'll save you $500 in processing. :)
Loren
paulnj 05-03-2006, 08:54 AM You know exactly what I mean pal :D

Another comedian!
;-)
You miss your F5. Tell the truth. Yeah, the F6 may be the greatest film camera ever, but it just isn't the same as oldsides, the F5.
I found out today a pro here in town recently got a D200. It's a VERY popular camera.
How how do I find out about the latest software updates? I definitely want to make sure I've got the latest, most up to date software I can get.
And when can we expect that pro review of the D200? Still wringing it out I take it?
Thanks for the comments my friend!
