While we are showing off our derrier's...

This one if for you Chaos :-)

Heh. heh. Kind of reminds me of all the plumbers crack I see now around the malls, stores and restaurants. What is it with teen age girls wearing lower-than-hip-hugging jeans, a thong and a not quite long enough shirt?!? They sit down to eat, chat, or whatever -- and there you go -- PLUMBERS CRACK. Although, one of my wife's young cousins told me that it's called "butt cleavage" and it's the "in" thing. I think I might invest in Wet Wipes

Now, to throw more on to the fire, I'm seeing way too many young ladies who absolutely SHOULD NOT be attempting this. Just me male-pig opinion.

Can you imagine if this catches on for guys too? Won't you ladies just LOVE seeing hairy butt cleavage while trying to fill the hunger void at Panera?!?

By the way -- cute kid, 'eh?

While I agree with your opinion that there are too many young girls who should not be attempting it, it does, on the flip side, make me happy that they feel comfortable enough to do so. Maybe we'll finally, in this upcoming generation, let girls feel more comfortable in the bodies they have, than making them feel horrible for the bodies they have not.

Until we get a good solid program of nutritional and fitness education in this country COMBINED with Big Food taking some responsibility, we need to have a more relaxed attitude about beauty.

Is that a controversial topic? I've gotta go...

kelly -- I don't like it no matter the size! It's surely not beauty in any case.

I agree with you completely about women being comfortable and your overall case for beauty. I think women are the most amazing thing to happen to this planet! The female body is more appealing in it's form than anything I can think of. guys, we're just stuck with this funny shape Woman, with their curves and subtleties (sp?) are simply appealing to they eye!

Trust me, my rant is more about the current trend towards the popularity of plumbers crack I don't get it. I mean, when I see my friend Greg, who has perpetually displayed plumbers crack since I knew him when he was 18, I don't think it's a fashion statement! To me it's a signal to turn away

Your friend Greg is a trend spotter!

There is a difference between girls who are comfortable enough to wear it, and girls who feel the need to wear it because society dictates that it is the "cool thing". The need to fit it is a powerful one, regardless of what size a person is. And so much emphasis is placed on appearances. Many children don't get the kind of encouragment they should for other things, they exploit the things they have. Be it "butt cleavage", an athletic gift, or piercing and tattoos. These things get them attention, be it positive or negative. Children need to know they are worth more than looks or an ability to do something well.

As a mother of two young girls, this is something I constantly worry about. I have a friend who is constantly talking about weight, and whenever she talks about anything, she mentions how big someone was, or how much weight she's put on, or how skinny this person is. I actually had to tell her that we don't discuss weight in our house. We talk about healthy eating and exercise, but weight is not something that comes up until after the girls have gone to bed, if at all.

We try to teach our girls the importance of being healthy, and praise and encourage them for the accomplishments they've made, and the effort they made to get there, not what they look like. If you instill confidence in a child while they are young, the teenage years will not be so difficult. Yeah, they'll still be hard, it's the nature of the game. But if they can be comfortable with themselves, it won't be as hard.

Sorry, this is a biggie for me. It's a long and complicated story, needless to say it is something that I would not wish on anyone, especially my own children. It took me 22 years to be comfortable with who I am. For some people it can be two or three times as long. I will do whatever I can to give my children that gift early on.

adina -- you are right on the money. My wife, two of her cousins and her aunt all have struggled with some form of eating dissorder. One of the cousins is your stereo-typical "knockout". 6' tall, thin, endowed, beautiful face and smile, and great hair. However, she ended up in a clinic due to a severe bout. Thankfully, she fought back and has managed to become comfortable with who she is. She is still 6' tall, thin, endowed, with beautiful face and smile, and great hair. But now she does not fret over the outside pressures. She's just herself.

Interestingly enough, her mother still obsesses about weight and excercise. Hmmm. I wonder where it came from?

My wife and I were discussing with another couple the other night just how hard high school was and is. If I can get my boys to realize that high school is simply 4 years of your life where people suck I will be happy I'll explain to them that it's some sort of alien abduction thing. Once they get out of high school, all is cool again!

The oversharpening makes it look like a detail from a Botticelli cupid.

    Plumber butt

I agree that it's pretty vulgar on anyone except a baby.
I'll not get into the female body issues, since adina and kelly pretty much covered it!

    ...

IMO, there is nothing cuter than baby butt crack. ;)

As for the issue at hand, as the mom to two girls, all I can say is Britney Be Damned! That stuff is not coming anywhere near, in, or around my house.

    Amen.

I told my wife that I wanted to do a series on butt cleavage. Just snap away shots at the mall, on the streets of Portsmouth, in and around town. She told me that she would not bail me out of jail

Heh. I looked up the whois on buttcleavage.com and it's taken, at least until 2005 buttcleavge.net is available though. We could start a nationwide expose on butt cleavage! Anyone want to join us on this adventure? We have the N. East corridor covered
