    Whatzit??

Just came across this shot from earlier this summer while looking for something else. Not a good shot but I thought folks might like trying to guess what it is.

    Re: Whatzit??

Hexagonal structure, transparent material, lack of DoF, macro shot perhaps.

I guess it's a reflector of some sort.
Possibly a while reflector on the fornt of a bicycle ?

    Looks to me...

...like the mutated virus in Michael Crichton's Andromeda Strain. Am I close???

Wow, I see where the "Smart" in "SmartWombat" originates! Your answer is exactly right until you put it on a bike.
This reflecter was screwed to a post alongside a crooked, hilly road in East Tennesee called "The Dragon" by motorcyclist and sportscar enthusiasts. It has 318 curves in 11 miles and is a blast to ride. Here's a group of Audis as seen from that post.

As you can tell from my other reply, you are amazingly close with your answer differing in only a couple small details.
    Thanks for playing, Steve.

    Ah, but you know...

...it's possible that it's a mutated virus ON a roadside reflector...

    Re: Whatzit??

This is a tough one. At first it made me think of a watch band but I think it's smaller than that. Maybe something like a knurled ring on a lens.

    Smaller than that, yet.
I think it's the edge of a coin maybe.

Looks at about the magnification I got with a 135mm lens on the end of the cardboard tube out of an aluminium kitchen foil box.
I forget the aperture we calculated for it, arounf f200 I think !

    SmartWombat strikes again.
Its the Lincoln memorial as depicted on the back of a penny.
This image was made with the d-70 2x tc, 3 ring tube set, and 100mm macro lens. And it was cropped.
I thought that it was an image that I had made with a Cannon ae1-p, 2x tc, 3 ring tube set, 100- 300 zoom macro with a reversed 50mm attatched to the zoom with an ace wrap, the mag on film was about 9x.

That's why they don't call me SmartChunk.
I didn't realize there is a figure of Lincoln on the back of the coin.
Wow, that's a lot of work. I thought I'd try a macro shot with my Panasonic to show folks who might not have one of our pennies what we are talking about. The penny is about 18.8 mm in diameter. the crop is a straight crop from the original file without any sharpening or resizing.

Nope, not sure if i can give any hints that wont give it away.......hum.....
Cops use this, but this is only a very small part of the whole item. Look at the surounding areas rather than focusing on the main object!

Your hint gave away too much I think but I'll wait and let some others take a shot at this.
