    "What's a negative?"

Over the weekend my wife received some old photos from her mom. It was fun sharing these memories with the kids and my wife stated that her mom even gave her the negatives. My 12YO daughter looked at us blankly and asked, "what's a negative?" The wife and I look at each other speechless for a moment.

As with 8 track tapes (before my time ), cassette tapes, LPs, 5 1/4" floppies, and so forth, everything evolves. It will be interesting to see what items we regard as staples today will be gone/modified in the (near) future.

    Re: "What's a negative?"

    good one

Makes me wonder , how much is life different for today kids vs. how it was for us 20+ , 30+, 40+ , etc years ago ?

Do kids today know the concept of being "lost" specially now that almost everyone has a cell phone ,and likely with some sort of way to connect to the internet and show them where they are (ie: GPS)

what happens to them when they run out of batteries ???

makes me want to start a thread of "old technology" photos ...

I've had someone ask me what a Polaroid camera was.

    Re: "What's a negative?"

Several years ago I was taking pictures of some kids at my wife's family reunion.
After several shots they all came running over and wanted to know where the pics were as they looked at the back of my camera.

Paper will be the next thing to go. Everything is going paperless these days.

Huh - the paperless office is just as likely as the paperless toilet.

    Re: "What's a negative?"

I had a related experience a couple of years ago. In a blog entry for PR, "Is the Camera Broken?", a friends little daughter (a five year old at the time) wanted to see the 'pic-a-toors' I just had shot. Now this was with a Nikon F100 screaming in full high speed rewind mode.

When I told her she couldn't see them right now, she wanted to know if the camera was broken as it was making so much noise.

She probably will never relate to negative at all. It's all on the computer now.

    Re: "What's a negative?"

Ahh the memories of the old Vinyl records, and memories of 8-track tapes, how them good old days still linger in my mind.
Them old things like, Beta, Laser Disks only lasted for a short time.
What about them old dinners with the Jukebox in them, Sock hops, and them old street drags, and they wonder why kids are in so much trouble now a days.
Feel Free to edit my photos, However please explain what you did to them.

Remember when we used to use the imperial system before we adopted the metric system in the late 70's?

lol, even when I pick up a film body, I'll occasionally glance at the back, expecting a pic. Then smacking head...

    Re: "What's a negative?"

Paper Maps and he ablity to figure out how to read one ! between Map sites ( like Mapquest and google ) and GPS's that give turn by turn instructions . Kids will no longer know how to read one .

On a Side note , at a garage sale , My son saw a Mechanical ( non electric) type write and just could not understand the concept. that you had to press the Button HARD for it to work
Feel free to edit my Pics to show me how to make them Better.
