    What have I done?!

Oh, the joys of listening to a 9 y/o learn how to play the violin!

Well, whatever you did, you captured a really nice shot. I love the composition, the lighting, color - everything is good about this. Her expression is priceless.

I hope you'll frame this one.

First off, the shot looks really good. You raised the height a little and got the shadows to drop down and to the left. I see a bit more fill on the left, a bit of refledtor maybe. You got a very nice catch light from the key in her eyes, very cool. As far as the music, it will get better if they keep practicing. My 11 year old plays trumpet and my 17 year old the trombone. The dog hates the trombone and the cat hates the trumpet. If both practice at the same time, the animal meets in the middle of the house and go crazy.

    Re: What have I done?!

    Thanks guys!

Freygr, I know she'll get better. She's having a blast practicing and I know when I was learning guitar it I was no Eddie Van Halen right off the bat. Our poor cats hide when she starts. I should have taken a picture of the one covering his ears while he was trying to sleep yesterday.

Liz, I think I will frame this one. The one thing I don't like about it is the little pillow on the violin. Don't know how I missed it when I was shooting but I love the expression on her face and I doubt I can capture it again if I try to force it.

Michael, I've been following your advice as closely as I can. I did bump the light up by about 18" and, while I didn't pick up a reflector yet (today!), I closed the door to the room and picked up a slight reflection off of it. I'm also backing up to give myself 8x10 crop room. I'm surprised out how hard it is for me to break the habit of trying to frame every shot so I don't need to crop.

I agree, music is great! My boys followed suit and are playing guitar in the church youth band.

I have to say that is a very nice portrait!

Forget the violin, get her fiddle lessons and have her support you in your old age.

BTW looking at the photo I want to see a little more on the right-nothing wrong with a square image.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Hehe... that's a good plan!

There is little more on the right, it's just cropped off to fit 8x10. Waiting for my buddy to get his framing biz going.....

I will. I was thinking about you a couple weekends ago when the wife and I were in the city.

I would not worry about the pillow on the violin. I'm not violinist expert, but I do believe that this is a natural way of practicing/playing. Besides it's not like it's a big white fluffy pillow - it's actually very nice.

It's a great picture and I wouldn't change a thing. It's natural and the expression is priceless. With a child, a portrait as wonderful as this is very difficult to capture. It's a classic and I would consider it a treasure.

That pillow is called a shoulder rest. As she progresses she might switch to something more subtle. They are used to prop up the violin and prevent the wood from digging in to your shoulder.

    Re: What have I done?!

I just got a custom set of earplugs at a local gun sow when my daughter started playing the trumpet. When she and my son practice at the same time, (or when the wife gets on the honey do bandwagon) the plugs come in very handy.
