What do you get when you give an 8y/o her own camera?

We gave our daughter our first point and shoot (Kodak 4900) so she could take pictures of whatever she wanted to. Shame on me for not downloading them sooner! Here's some of the highlights....

I think that this is one of the greatest things about a P&S digital. You can hand it to a child and say here have fun lets see what you can do. When my kids were younger we always had some type of camera for them to use, but with film cost and developing we had to be a little more selective. The digital world is great for letting kids find themselves in the photo world. Nice thread!
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

She's too cute! I love the fact you've done this for her. My soon to be 9 yo son loves to take pics. It never crossed my mind to get him a camera. His b-day is next month. Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Talking Re: What do you get when you give an 8y/o her own camera?

I think this is just great. Tell her to keep up the great work. This is what is so great about P&S, the young ones don't even have to know how it works.

I had my first camera at age 6 (won't say how long ago) and I was hooked for life. Had a few off-spells along the way, but that is how it goes. Now I have migrated (?) to FF digital and am learning all over again. I hope this does it for her as well.

    Cheers,

She spent the entire afternoon and evening today chasing the cats around the house trying to get pictures of them. I've totally created a monster. I predict bankruptcy within the next 60 days due to AA battery expenses.

Ken -- Great idea. A kid doesn't have any predetermined ideas, can really go out there and enjoy photography. I really like the two first self portrait shots she took, sorta dreamy shots, shows creativity.

Spend the money on Metal hydride AA rechargeable batteries and a good charger. Just get two sets one on the charge one in the camera. Yes it costs some money to get setup but you save more than buying one or two sets of standard batteries weekly.

Fantastic gift Ken...I remember when I first entrusted my 4 year old granddaughter with our new Kodak p/s digital...It amazed us how good she was...she is now 9 and is learning to use her parents DSLR. As GB1 says...kids are an open book just looking to fill their pages!!!!
I look forward to seeing many more from her...oh and lets not forget dad...hehe..
