    Weekend At The Cape

Cape Lookout that is. Saturday afternoon the wife and I loaded up the boat and headed over to Cape Lookout, where we camped out overnight. Here are a few shots from that trip.

The first shot is sunset. I've been wanting to shoot sunset shots at Cape Lookout for years. The sunset wasn't spectacular, but at least I got it.

The second shot is a twilight shot of the lighthouse with an outbuilding. 8 seconds at f 8.

Third shot is our campsite. 30 seconds at f 8.

The last shot was taken on manual mode. A one second shot at f 2.8. This is Dawn's favorite.

    My bad!

    Here ya go buddy.

This was actually the second shot I took over there.

    :-D

The doctor she works with has had health problems, so she's been working 50 to 60 hours a week. She hasn't felt very glamorous lately, so I haven't been in her face with the camera a lot. The good news is, he's suppose to come back to work next week, so hopefully things will slow down for her.

The first shot is reduced for PR. The second one is a crop of the lovely wife doing what she loves to do - soak up sun.

Now that is what I call kicked back. Hope the weekend helped her regain her sanity. I know Joy has been under a lot of pressure at work the last month or so and the trip to Nashville this weekend to see the grand baby did wonders for her.

Actually, there wasn't much in the way of mist. But I also like how the light is picked up by the humidity in the air. Here's another one for you. This was a two second exposure at f 2.8. I also added a sunrise shot for you. It was tough getting up at 6 am, but hey, I was willing to make the sacrifice for my buddies here at PR!

Oh yeah! And she needed it. When she got off work, she had made up her mind that if I wasn't ready to go, then she was just going to stay at home and vegatate. BUT, I was 3/4 of the way there already, with the coolers in the boat, and the tent by the front door. :-D

She really enjoyed the weekend, and it helped her recharge her batteries. She loves laying out in the sun, and as you can tell, the view was spectacular. We set up our tent about 150 yards from the lighthouse. It was the first time either of us had camped out at the Cape, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Glad to hear that the getaway helped Joy keep her sanity. Sometimes you need to just get away.

Cool! Nice sunrise shot! You know, I often think of how this website affects my photography; not only how I shoot, but what I shoot! Sometimes I think the only reason I even have a digital camera is so I can quickly post pictures up here on Viewfinder

"is so I can quickly post pictures up here on Viewfinder"

Sounds like all the reason you need!

PR has been the biggest influence on my photography. Not only have I learned a tremendous amount, but it has inspired me, challenged me, and opened my horizons, not only to what I shoot, but also how I shoot, and what my movitations are to take a shot. It's nice having this extended family to encourage one another.

I'm here for you buddy, just like you're here for us!

It was! We could hear the ocean so clearly, and Dawn loves the sound of the ocean. It was a very nice weekend, and we enjoyed it immensely.

I'm not sure I want to read much more about Paul and his "thingy"...

Great shots Speed! There aren't many lighthouses in my part of CA.. I'm thinking an East Coast Lighthouse trip may be in order...

Thanks for sharing these with us!

Wink I'm not sure I want to read much more about Paul and ...

    "his "thingy""

Hehehe. This goes back a year or more, when some Nikon Samurai gave a compliment to a Canon shooter and refered to his camera as a "Canon thingy". Same ole good natured ribbing between the Nikon shooters and those that choose to shoot inferior equipment. ;-)

"I'm thinking an East Coast Lighthouse trip may be in order..."

Come on down buddy! You can stay at my house and use it as a base of operations. I'll be glad to take you to Cape Lookout and Ocracoke Lighthouse. Depending on when you come and how long you're down for, we may be able to go to Old Baldy, Oak Island and maybe even Cape Hatteras. Just let me know when you're coming!

    A Lighthouse Sampler For Brian

A few to whet your appetite.

First a couple of shots from Charleston, SC. These were taken in December of 2004.

First a shot of my favorite model with yours truly, in front of the Morris Island Lighthouse. Then a shot of the Morris Island Lighthouse, more commonly known as the Charleston Lighthouse. Finally, another model decided to "pose" for me. The Sullivan Island Lighthouse is visible in this shot as well. Finally, one from Ocracoke.

Love the set-up. I can't believe you can camp that close to the lighthouse. Makes it easier to go pee in the middle of the night, i bet.

It looks like you and Dawn had a private island all to yourself.

The first shot of the ugly dude and the hottie is a great shot. Nice light and a strong composition... I really like that one a lot. Kudos to the photographer.

As for the Lighthouse trip.. It'll have to be some time next year, but I'll be sure and keep you posted if it starts to pan out. And I appreciate your generous offer.

Lightbulb I can't believe you can camp that close to the lighthouse.

The minimum distance is 100 yards. We were probably 150 to 200 yards away.

"Makes it easier to go pee in the middle of the night, i bet. "

Actually, I was rather self concious about it. That lighthouse puts out a lot of light around it. It lights the area up pretty well. I didn't expect the ground to be that well lit. :-O

"It looks like you and Dawn had a private island all to yourself."

We wish. There were about 10 tents set up 100 yards beyond us. And a mess of them on the other side of the lighthouse as well. Now the last time we went camping, we went to Shackleford Banks, and there was only one other tent on the island that we could see. But now that the warm weather is here, there are more people camping.

So, if you want to go camping at the Cape (or Shackleford) without the crowds, come down before May. March and April are fairly nice months to go camping. I'll extend the same offer to you as I did to Brian. Come to NC and stay with Speed and family. We'll give you a place to stay, show you the sights, take you out on the boat, even take you camping on the outer banks if you want. Just drop me a line and tell me when you want to come. Of course, you can bring Mrs. Lamp and the kids as well. We'd love to have you.
