Re: Want to help the less fortunate

Events like these are fantastic! I participated for my first time last year in my local Help-Portrait group (Milton, ON, Canada), and did it again last weekend, plus we're running a second one this coming Saturday!

I'm not usually one who does family portraits, not exactly my cup of tea, but I had a blast.

I highly recommend linking up with your local group.

This looks interesting. I read the links; however, would someone explain what you do? How does this work? I could not find details.

    Thanks!

Re: Want to help the less fortunate

The event is basically where the less fortunate or those who wouldn't usually get their photo taken can come into the event, get all tidied up (there are makeup and hair folks there also), and get a professional portrait done of them and then a print is given to them.

The events that I've done is Milton aim more towards families, for example last Saturday I participated in the first of two events in Milton where one mother and her two kids lost everything in a fire, so they got for free their photos taken.

Everyone gives their time, talents, and materials, for the benefits of those who need it. We don't do it for our own sake, I will never show any photos that I take of these people to the world, nor will they ever be in my portfolio, I do it because I want to do it, all volunteer.

I probably should have linked to the main site that explains it all: Help-Portrait | 10 Dec 2011

Thank you, Alex and Icicle....I'm going to spend more time reading about it. This is the first time I've heard of it, and I appreciate the information. It's really an incredible project - thank you for sharing about it on PR. Good time of the year to introduce it to those of us who are not aware of it.

    Liz,
I also apologize for not posting the main link. I stumbled on it last night and I didn't have to think hard about it, so this will be my first go at it.

That's ok - you started the thread that peaked my interest!

It looks like a wonderful project. I might be interested if there is one already around my area. I wouldn't want to start my own without some experience and the expertise of another group already formed.
