    Transfigured

The Church of the Transfiguration in Buffalo. Built in the late 1800s in the Gothic style, the parish was shut down in 1991. Various attempts have been made to restore the building, but nothing seemed to stick.

From the back, the church's appearance is very traditional for churches, the shape of the cross. The naive at the back, or front of the sanctuary, with two short chapels just in front off to each side, then the long section leading to the front doors of the building where the congregation sat.

Clearly at one point this building was a source of beauty. Now, the plaster is falling, the floor, devoid of most of its pews sits covered in animal waist, dirt, and I really don't want to know what else.

This cabinet at one point held the pipe organ, a beautiful instrument which the playing of is a dying art. I don't know when it was installed, but it was probably powered first by a water based blower motor, which would've been upgraded to electric later in it's life. The pipes and console are long gone.

Staying quiet I leave the sanctuary for the stillness of the narthex, the front entrance of the church just behind the front doors, I turn and look back through the doors. When people still worshiped here, you would be greeted by someone offering you a bulletin.

18 years takes it's toll on a building.

The back pew, a highly sought after spot within a Presbyterian Church, but this was Polish Roman Catholic.

Beautiful stained glass once revealed to the world is covered in harsh plywood, however, light front another window catches it again.

    Re: Transfigured

Reminds me of some of the stuff in Life After People.
    Catholic?
That stained glass has to be worth a lot of money by itself.

Yes, this was the third Polish Roman Catholic Parish in Buffalo.
