Traction Engine

Couple of B&Ws from Sunday at local traction engine society

Those things must way a ton! or two or three or four.
Know anything about when they were made/used?

The top machine I believe was used as a road roller , this is the first time in a 50 year period that it had been fired up. The second machine was under going restoration after recovery from having been completely buried for many years. There are many more machines there in various states of repair, some of them are real works of art IMO and as its only about 5km from where I live I will try to shoot some of the more colourful machines when they get them fired up if anyone's interested

That's awesome. Is that a giant flywheel above the rear wheel? I'd love to see one of those run.

Top engine doesn't look like a road roller, doesn't have the huge roller instead of the front wheels. I'll have to go to a local steam fair and get a few shots this year.
The flywheel could be used for drive of farm machinery, through a flat leather belt running on the rim of the flywheel, so doing the work of a stationary engine as well as a traction engine on the road.

I'm surprised any got shipped out to NZ as cargo, they're pretty heavy freight, do you know if it was locally made, or imported?

The chap that showed me around told me that the top machine started life as a roller
I noticed there was a front roller behind the shed. Hope you can make it to a steam fair Paul

I believe a lot of them were made by Mclaren in UK

It's not that surprising; after all, a lot of steam locomotives were shipped from Britain to various parts of the empire, and other countries, and they were much heavier

Well, you got me hooked on the videos , straigtarm. Only watched 3 so far but will be gong back. Loved the one of the tractor climbing the hill.
