Yup, it looks like a reflection off the back side of a UV filter. It's upside down and backwards from the original. The moon is on the right, a little closer to the top than center - and the reflection is on the left, a little closer to the bottom than center.

    My Attempt

This was one of the nicest lunar eclipses I have seen. We had spotty clouds but they were moving fast and there were nice clear periods too.

I haven't shot the moon in awhile and didn't remember about shutter speeds - it takes a relatively fast one to stop it, surprisingly. I remember bumping my ISO up to 400 and shooting at or near f2.8 but not sure what shutter speed (hey, it was cold...). Anyway, could that be part of it? I relied on autofocus since it was too small in the viewfinder with my 200mm lens.

    Joe, nice shot!

    Eclipse Update

As feared, we had dense cloud cover last night so no eclipse for me. Guess I'll just have to wait until the next one.

Looks like everyone else had some luck and captured some awesome shots. Thanks for sharing them with the less fortunate.

    EXIF says 1DmkIII and 300mm
This would be about a 1/8 frame crop judging by 600mm on the 1DSmkII at 1/4 frame crop

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse February 20th

Thanks everyone. This was taken with my 1D Mark III and Sigma 300mm 2.8 lens. Just over a half second at f4. ISO 400. I used a tripod with the self timer and mirror lock-up. The image is not resized at all just cropped to eliminate all the empty black space.

    Take care,
    Joe

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse February 20th

i think that was my problem, i had my shutter speed to long.... like 5-10 seconds. guess i learned my lesson, next time it will be shorter. if it hadn't of been 0 degrees i would have experimented more.

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse February 20th

I just got done looking through my photos from last night. I'm not happy with them. The images of the progression turned out pretty good, but once the moon was in total shadow, I turned the ISO way up, and still underexposed them. Way too much noise in them to salvage them. It's going to be a long wait for the next eclipse.

My two lame attempts... I like this camera but there is just no available accesory lens or anything. This is a Canon Powershot SX100IS. Also the tripod didnt helped much. This was taken with the digital zoom feature. Guess can ask for more..LOL!

I learned years ago to not use the digital zoom. The camera manufactuers have made great advances in digital photography, but I limit myself to optical zoom and crop as necessary.

Still not bad shots considering the gear. I like the detail you got on the dark side of the moon in the first shot.
