    Square crop

But if I wanted square images I'd have bought a square camera !
Don't tell me I ought to carry a holga as well.

    Re: Square crop

In general I think a square crop is neat. It really depends on what's happening in the photo though. If you can get away with it, great!

Love these shots, Paul. And I thought for a second you were seriously starting that inane argument over square versus rectangular cropping that, er...crops up from time to time. Ouch, sorry...

Obviously, the square crop is as legit as legit can get. If nothing else, it is the long standard for music albums, both CDs as well as going back to the golden age of record cover art.

As for shooting, I have always felt that, even with an eventual sqaure crop, the rectangular camera format has it all over 6x6, etc., simply because it gives you cropping options.

When you shoot square in the camera, that's it, you're locked into one crop (unless you crop down and around). Shooting rectangular gives you multiple square crop options without diminishing the image size...

    Re: Square crop

    Thanks, Steve.
I thought about perhaps getting a TLR at some point.
But I think that I'd start wanting to go back to the format I grew up with, 3:2
Now with 10MP plus in digital I think there's enough resolution for my purposes to crop square rather than shooting square.
I just ordered some half price 20x30 prints to find out

I'm not sure though if the discipline of shooting square would improve my work or not.
I think it's easy to get a little lazy if you know you can crop it later ?
